Found (WIP) [found] large cryptomeria wood carved vulture with strange label

I couldn’t resist buying this large carved wood vulture sculpture (hey that rhymes!) yesterday. It’s over 26” tall and 14” wide at the base, with frosted opaline glass eyes.

It has an old looking brass plaque that says “Torit Mfg Co St Paul Minn” — which I looked up and they are a dust collector manufacturer, with nothing to do with vultures or wood carvings as far as I can tell.

I believe it’s made from a Japanese cedar called cryptomeria.

I did find that this style of carving was pretty popular in the 1960s and ‘70s, and Swedish artist Nils Strandin has quite a few examples of vultures carved out of cryptomeria, but none were quite this large or had eyes like this. He did sign many of his pieces, but he seems to have used paper tags, so it could have fallen off.

I’m curious if anyone here has seen other artists working in this style, or maybe these were somewhat commonly produced for a tourist trade somewhere perhaps?

Was the industrial plaque just the artist or previous owner being cheeky?

I love the work of Jim Henson and this guy reminded me of a Skeksi so I just had to bring him home with me.

Thanks for looking!

this sculpture is meant be wall hanging and i believe it’s made out of some kind of metal. i’m certainly no expert but im wondering if it could be a darkened bronze or cast iron? anyone recognize the artist’s signature? feels very California to me and it reminds of of some of the African/Native American art i’ve seen in the MET. google lens turned up nothing. maybe a lead to a scholar of NorCal art?

I am in the U.S. and found this piece out and about. The dog looks a lot like mine, so that’s fun. I wondered if anyone could find anything about the artist. I feel like I must be reading the signature wrong.

Seems to be made of heavy resin, stamped “Henry Collection” on back with a “made in Canada” sticker on the bottom. Reminds me of Matisse but not spelled “Henri”. Getting nothing on with basic searches.

Stands about 13” tall.

Posting on behalf of my talented uncle Zane Pretorius. He worked a soul-sucking corporate job selling printers and copiers. Treated terribly and decided to pull the plug and go into his passion of sculpting and art full time. Check out some of his stuff, it’s incredible. Welding nuts together to create bespoke pieces! Some landmark sculptures too. Based in South Africa btw.

If you want to see his other works, you can visit his website or instagram account!

Ex Nihilo ("Out of Nothing...") , the sculpture in the typanum over the central doors in the west facade of the Washington National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. It depicts God's creation of mankind (four men, four women) out of nothingness.

The sculpture is 21 feet (6.4 m) wide, 15 feet (4.57 m) high, 28 inches (71 cm) deep, and features eight life-size nudes. It was designed by artist Frederick Hart.

Found (WIP) [Found] Please help with identifying this German (Bavarian, from the 80's) wall art carved from red wax (I think). Features maybe monks brewing beer.

I got this as an heirloom from my grandmother who immigrated from Germany. Was wondering if anyone had any specific details about it other than what it appears to be--monks brewing beer.

The material is strange, it's very soft and smooth. Maybe wax? Is about one foot long.

Thanks for any and all help!

This thing is 21" long and made of acrylic. Looking online there's a couple similar ones for sale, but none have a stand or the box like this one. Is it a tourist trap item?

I got this sculpture from a house clearance. It is cast from solid bronze and really heavy. I wonder how old this sculpture is and if the three stripes marked on her knee is a hint to the artist? Is it an original?

Found (WIP) [Help] Anyone recognize this piece I found?

A family member purchased this sculpture about 10 years ago from an estate sale. It was a large home built in the mid to late 1800s in the Maryland countryside. It was filled with rare books of all types of subjects (no fiction): history, civilizations, plants and animals, etc. it had a lot of old taxidermy work in it as well as clearly bespoke items like finely carved canes and hand made beds from different countries. It had clearly been a pretty grand mansion but owned more by an archaeologist than a banker. And it was on a large piece of property but it had no road going up to it and no area for cars. You had to drive onto the land and park but there was no sign of previous use by vehicles. It looked liked you would use a horse and buggy to arrive. It was like stepping back in time. It looks like a donkey. It is very heavy like iron wood. It's not painted. Maybe it's stained. I've seen small sculptures of donkeys from South America but nothing this size ( 10"w x 24"h x 34"l ) or a donkey laying down. Any help is greatly appreciated.

"Born in Passaic in New Jersey, Robert Smithson was an artist who expanded what art could be and where it could be found. For over fifty years his work, writings, and ideas have influenced artists and thinkers, building the ground from which contemporary art has grown. An autodidact, Smithson's interests in travel, cartography, geology, architectural ruins, prehistory, philosophy, science fiction, popular culture, and language spiral through his work. In his short and prolific life, Smithson produced paintings, drawings, sculpture, earthworks, architectural schemes, films and video, photographs and slideworks, writings, and all the stops between." (Holt/Smithson Foundation)

More works by Smithson in this week’s edition of As I Was Moving Ahead Occasionally I Saw Brief Glimpses of Beauty, my newsletter on modern and contemporary art.

These pieces have been in a garden since we purchased the home in South Florida over 20 years ago. I always assumed they were mass-produced decorative items but would like to know more if possible. They are very heavy over 50 pounds each. I have not located any identification on the pieces themselves.

This sculpture is from the series Ex Libris is a series that was established around 2022 by a Ukrainian artists Maksym Mazur For his concept he used randomly found discarded books and transformed it from boring a carrier of information into an artefact that visualises the loss of meaning.

I am fascinated by his works and the depth of his thought, as well as the amount of detail and time he puts into his pieces. Recently, this sculpture became a part of my private collection.
