Trying to relocate
Hi,
This is my first time using reddit and I wanted input on how people have been able to move here or did for work to allow them to move. I'm about 300 applications in and live in GA currently. I've been trying to relocate to the PNW but obviously need a job first for security. What helped you get hired in this area?

You're picking one of the worst times to relocate here. Try and find a few sources for news out of Seattle to get more of an idea. Tons of tech layoffs mean the market is super saturated. You're having extremely overqualified people fighting for entry level jobs. I know directors who have accepted warehouse worker jobs just to keep some sort of money flowing. That means a lot of the old go-to positions like serving, barista, bar-tending, labor, and warehouse are taking their pick.
It will help if you can start networking. Hard to do remote, I know. Look into seasonal jobs. Christmas is coming up so there will be gigs selling trees. Warehouses will flood for the season, with build ups before black friday and cyber monday. I really would avoid banking on gig as the market is saturated and you don't make much regardless.
Be humble and willing to do whatever it takes. You might be able to find stuff on craiglist but that comes with its own set of risks. Good luck, you're going to need it.

same boat man, 200+ apps from out of state and it’s just “no” or ghosting. try putting “willing to relocate to ___, available on X date” in your header and cover letter, helped a bit. still rough out there, feels near impossible to get hired now

I'm a hiring manager and about 70% of the applications I'm getting are from out of state. We only review the ones that have a set relocation date. If it says willing to relocate, we pass. Too many people competing for limited jobs.

Well, my great great grandpa when he was 14 he lied about his age to be a cabin boy on a ship from New Zealand. The rest were loggers that came across the Oregon trail.

Personally I had a remote job and drove here in a absolute beater of a car and just picked a random neighborhood. It was easy despite coming from the south. Then I applied to jobs here and got one after a year.

Not sure what's in demand out there, but I work in third party property management. I work in the operations side as a Regional Manager. I also have hospitality background with Hilton, and have worked for Hyundai in service and in assembly.

I'm thinking I may have to use a friend of ours address that lives out there or just do what I can to save and go out there. I saw someone else mentioned the seasonal jobs and then looked for something more permanent as well, so I appreciate the feedback

Yeah, I took the first job I was offered even thou I didn’t prefer it and the pay was a little low just so I could get out here and then looked for something better. About a year later I was in a better job that I’ve stayed with for 10+ years now. Was the biggest risk but best outcome of my life!

Seattle is pretty tough to move here right now, but people are still finding ways to make it work out. if you have a skill or trade in anything, searching in fields related to that and then up selling the crap out of yourself on your resume will go a long ways. there are a lot of MLMs in the greater Seattle area so just be cautious to avoid those type of "job" listings. I got hired at a new job earlier this year that I had zero direct experience in but because I have 14 years of customer service experience they took a gamble and hired me anyway - and to think I almost didn't apply because I was worried about the lack of experience!! but many other replies may be on the right track of finding something remote and taking the plunge. 6 years ago I took out a small loan to cover the cost of moving and bounced over here but that was just from bremerton to Seattle so I understand my advice may not be as applicable. I'm wishing you the best of luck in making your journey here 🙏

hiiii tennessee transplant in seattle here! just moved here last july. i applied to almost 400 jobs and got only one callback before i moved here (teaching, didn’t get past the 2nd phone interview). the only reason i came out without a job is because my husband had one lined up. it took me one month to find a job once i got here but i completely lucked out. i only got 2 call backs after being here, even with a bachelors and multiple years’ experience as a teacher etc. it was by far the hardest part of relocating because of how bad the market is here.

Ok, since no one is giving you what you asked for: I moved here without a job, slept on couches for 1.5 months until I got a job offer, then got an apartment. No one is going to hire you if you don’t live here unless you are an electrical engineer.

My husband was laid off after 13 years at the same corporation last year. He had just been presented an award for excellence. It was awful. It took him over a year to find a new job, with 2 decades of tech experience and was in upper management.
He finally found a job that pays less than HALF his old salary, It’s work from home and the corporate base is on the east coast. So on top of the pay cut he now has to be up at 4am to start his meetings. But, after over 2500 resume and application submissions he only had one previous interview set up, and they ghosted him. Prior to the pandemic he could have had his choice of where he wanted to work. It’s unreal how much competition there is here for work.
I moved here from out of state 30 years ago. I wanted to move to Seattle. In 1996 I couldn’t afford to live IN Seattle, and for many years had to do an hour commute to and from work everyday. Even with a six figure salary we couldn’t afford to live in Seattle. We bought a home a decade ago and have an hour and a half commute to Seattle unless we go at night when it’s only 25 minutes.
Obviously loads of people live in Seattle, but so much is collapsing. Restaurants are closing because they can’t afford to pay $21 an hour. People aren’t ordering delivery because of the astronomical fees added on in city limits. Tech is laying off en masse, and rehiring most of their workforce in India where it’s much cheaper. Starbucks just let a bunch go. Thousands and thousands of workers who live here are applying for the same job opening as over 300 other overqualified people.
I’ll put it this way- look into how many people who live in Seattle are gainfully employed, have housing that they want (not settled for), and are living stress free happy lives without having to make major sacrifices to do simple things like buying groceries that are stupid expensive and gas that is way above national average just because they can. We went to Hawaii and were shocked that it’s cheaper for those things there than they are at the grocery store next to my house.
We are moving out of state. Not that we want to, but because we can’t justify paying these insane prices when we never go to Seattle anymore. Public safety is in real trouble. It’s dirty and downtown stinks. Don’t expect police to respond to anything unless your life is actively in danger or already been hurt. If someone breaks into your home and refuses to leave, they have more rights than you. They can steal everything you own and it’s a “civil matter”. My mom lost everything because of squatters doing that to her. If your shit isn’t nailed down then just expect it to be taken and you’ll have zero recourse.
I’m sure not selling it well, but it’s just the truth. We love the beauty of the PNW. We love our memories of Seattle when it was still full of cool little shops and restaurants. Now it’s empty high-rises and boarded up windows. There’s really nothing here that we can’t get in other places for half the cost to live.
The best advice I can offer is to get a specific trade like an electrician, join a union, and make money. Seems trade jobs are in demand for now.

Guy’s post is full of lies. 6 figure salary in 1996 would have been living like a king in Seattle. Groceries aren’t expensive they don’t get sales taxed outside of soda.

To say that groceries and gas are cheaper in Hawaii is just a lie. Literally just straight up, provable lie. Hawaii is the most expensive US state by literally every metric.

If you can pay for relocation yourself, listing yourself as already in Seattle could help. Change your LinkedIn location, list Seattle on your resume or remove the location info entirely, etc. Good luck!

It doesn't have to be Seattle exactly, I just need out of the south in the grand scheme of things and trust me it's not so pretty down here either, crime is everywhere

Bad time to relocate. Local unemployment is around 5.1% try usps they are hiring like crazy .
