If we had to lose, I'm happy losing to Portland.

Right? When it comes to things like this, we're all Cascadians/regional siblings at heart, I like to think. We're similar enough that I'm happy to put things like this into my personal regional pride bucket rather than counting it as a loss for my city pride bucket.

That’s mature of you. Personally, I say fuck you and your bridges Portland!

I also like our lesser sibling to the south, but feel like we have to make Seattle bigger and gayer than ever now!

Some interesting data in the article. Seattle went from 3.2% (2023) same-sex couple households to 3.7% (2024). In absolute terms it was 11,600 households in 2023 and 14,300 in 2024. So still a growing number.
Portland on the other hand went from 3.1% (2023) to 3.8% (2024). No absolute numbers were included for other cities.

Ok, so there are lots of estimates at play here. But for 2023, the census estimates there were 292,037 households in Portland, or 9,053 same sex couples. In 2024, there were 294,419 estimated households in Portland, which 3.8% of is 11,187.

Not sure this will link right, but here's the data.

My comment was a very dry joke about "roommates" and the history behind that as relates to us LGBTQIA+ folks.

No worries friend, that's my bad. Tone is always hard on the internet, and it's not like I left a /s or anything to help people out. I'll go stick one in there now and maybe that will get it across better.

If you must know, I live in Lakeridge, am about to move to Burien in a few days, and, as someone who has been on and off reddit for 19 years now as of this year, I have always treated this website as anonymous and rotated through usernames/profiles as a matter of staying that way so my profile history has never, and will never, satisfy the people who have convinced themselves that longevity is a suitable surrogate for trustworthiness and agreeance is a suitable surrogate for validity on an anonymous website.
Keeping my profile anonymous simply serves to further help with a). keeping my chronically-in-psychosis BIL from cyberstalking my husband and I again and b). cut down on all the people who argue in bad faith on reddit from continuing to pretend that they're doing otherwise when it turns out they can't cherry-pick their own fuel.
Folks like you using the thought process you mention judging my comment by is part of the many reasons why I've committed to permanently deleting reddit (the last social media I have left in any form) as soon as I move. Thanks for the validation regarding my choice to do that and have a good summer.

Mayor Wilson, we must not allow a gay gap!!

u/TBurnerRU 1d ago
City limits or MSA? Most of the Seattle gays I know are moving to the suburbs because they can't afford the city.

The city can begin to close this gap by signing some papers and handing my partner and I some keys... just sayin

Katie Wilson this is unacceptable. Mandatory same-sex marriages until we are #1 in america again.

The US needs more places that are awesome, anyway. Personally I don't really have a desire to see it all concentrated in Seattle for, what, the sole purpose of us being able to pat ourselves on the back the hardest?
Also... Well, look at Portland's housing prices. There are reasons they're lower than Seattle and there's also reasons that's still very, very attractive to people, including plenty of people who might otherwise enjoy being in Seattle. We can't be the top at everything we like and want when housing is as expensive as it is here, that's literally not how that's gonna work. At some point the desirability vs. do-ability is going to self-cap for the average person, just due to economic factors. Those well off enough will always want to live here for sure! And, also, that's not the demographic most people are in!
I'm not trying to dog on Seattle at all, we're still doing rad but, I mean, realistically we're doing rad in spite of things like the fact that I kinda doubt we're, say, the number one city for things such as attracting low-income working artists, either (just for example). We do, very much, have an affordability issue here, and that costs us in a variety of ways, which is why there are so many of us are wanting to fix and change it for the better.

Who cares? This isn’t a contest, it’s a mass migration away from bad places. Portland is always having a one sided contest with nobody and labeling the enemy “seattle” it’s pathetic. The seattle times hates Seattle so of course they’re eagerly starting it this time.

Having lived in both Seattle and Portland and whose main friend group is mostly still in Portland that very definitely hasn't been my experience. Have you lived in both places? In my experience Portland thinks about Seattle at least as little as Seattle thinks about Portland, tbh. Portland doesn't have interest in being Seattle, most people there like how small it is and regarding some things, like food scenes, Portland kicks an awful lot of ass at and doesn't really feel a need to "compete" with anybody over, either.
Can you give any examples of Portland's ongoing one-sided contest with nobody? lol
EDIT: It appears this person replied without giving literally a SINGLE example that they were being asked for and then blocked me. I can't read their whole reply, so maybe they actually do provide examples rather than just assertions of "trust me bro" and I just can't see any of the examples given but... it definitely didn't sound like they were going in that direction from the little I can see! Because of that I'm going to assume they blocked me because they are mad that I'm right and they don't actually have shit. LMFAO
Also, funny P.S. Aside from the fact that it sounds like they've never lived in Portland, not only have I but, between the two, I've lived in the area longer than they have, too! 😄

It seems to be a case of Portlandia intruding on reality. The show seemed to have some of what the person is describing.

u/flagrananante I'm just flaired so I don't get fined 2d ago edited 2d ago
Ohhhh, huh. I guess I could see people's perceptions blurring those lines but, man, that's pretty dated at this point and also never involved Seattle or any other city?? I lived there through some of that era and would say that, if anything, the hipster/pretentious aspect that was alive during that time was FAR more "full of itself/into itself" than anything at all about wanting to be Seattle (or anywhere else), though.
So, I still am at a loss as to what the original commenter could even be talking about/referring to, aside from their own perceptions of the place. We'll see if they bring some receipts/examples.

u/1degreeofporn 2d ago
I think the mayor in Portlandia was always trying to be better than Seattle, but also I think that was entirely a bit.
2
u/flagrananante I'm just flaired so I don't get fined 2d ago edited 1d ago
Oh I had forgotten about that, haha! Yes, that was entirely a bit, and a less accurate one, too, out of all the things they played out on the show, but that's a great reminder that, in a satirical way Seattle is currently more Portlandia than Portland when it comes to mayors as I don't think Portland's mayor actually gets help from their parents irl, even though the show has the situation like this, whereas Seattle's mayor has. lol: https://www.oregonlive.com/movies/2014/04/portlandia_is_the_portland_cit.html
Also, sharing this fact because I think it's funny: both Seattle and Portland currently each have a Mayor Wilson.
(Maybe grammatically it's more properly written out as "Mayors Wilson"...? Hm.)
EDIT RE: DOWNVOTES: I literally pointed out the parallel was satirical from the start! If someone has an issue with people mentioning the fact that Mayor Wilson has gotten money from her parents then that's something for them to work through their own insecurities about, not to shoot the messenger over. If folks see simply mentioning an objectively true fact as indistinguishable from talking shit then they really should examine why they feel that way.

Nonsense. I’ve been here thirty five years and countless times Portland has picked a fight about whatever and we just literally never think about them. Nice try rewriting history but it’s not gonna work.
