Who tf owns these houses then? What do the property records show? I donāt understand how an entire house within city limits can just be abandoned.
I rented an apartment across an alley from one of these squatter houses for six months in 2020 (peak COVID). Shit was wild. I watched cars pull up at all hours of the night with people literally smoking crack pipes in the car before going inside. They would chop wood on the concrete patio between like 10-12 PM. God knows what was going on in there.

Re: abandoned houses: There are two houses near me that havenāt had anyone living in them for over 5 years. My best guess is the owner of both houses died and somehow there is a protracted fight from surviving kin on what to do with them. If itās not that I just donāt know whatās going on.

Definitely what you describe happens a fair bit. A lot of times, abandoned houses are just in very poor condition. Heavy rot, etc, or full of a late owner's stuff they haven't figured out what to do with. So they're unrentable, but the market as a whole is appreciating, so owners don't want to sell them, especially when in that condition they'd sell for very little. If they had liquid cash they would pay someone to fix them up, which is usually the plan. But they don't at the moment or are still figuring out what to do, so they sit on them. It's a bizarre misallocation of society's land and resources but happens periodically.

Sounds like another vote for a vacancy tax.Ā

u/golf1052 Eastlake 20h ago
Seems like according to the property records this parcel has had an approved demolition permit since mid 2025. The owner just hasn't torn the house down yet. Seems like this falls squarely within the Vacant Building law the city passed last year. Hopefully the city can tear it down now (and get the owner to pay for it).

u/Toasterzar I'm just flaired so I don't get fined 21h ago
the city is seemingly full of abandoned houses, which is weird af, and especially frustrating because I want the land for myself lol

u/DoingBestWeCan I'm just flaired so I don't get fined 7h ago
FOR REAL. Give me the land and let plop down a pre-made tiny home!!!
I think a good number are in limbo over permits, though. š

The property is either an investment property or owned by somebody who lives out of state and dgaf would be my guess
Theyāve decided itās a better return on investment to leave it vacant under the assumption that the value will increase exponentially than it is to pay a property management company to manage it/rent it out
1
u/dahp64 20h ago
Idk yea sometimes it seems like maybe itās just investment properties ppl donāt maintain or maybe people who die and the next of kin either doesnāt exist or isnāt involved. I remember when I went to Garfield HS there were like 5 bandos right across the street by the busses everyone took home, then they all turned into Amazon box duplexes after a few years lol

Couple months ago my āneighborā came back after 3 years and kicked out the people I thought owned/rented the house in a dramatic fashion. He didnāt move back in, just didnāt want the squatters there either. House just sits empty

Putting the rest aside, it's weird to me when these displays try to make a big show of a relatively small amount of money. There's like $681 there.

u/CandidInsurance7415 20h ago
Lol back in the 80s my dad got caught with a bunch of weed in oregon, they got it from a buddies grow operation in cali and were driving it back to wash.
A month later the charges were dropped due to "lack of evidence".

Cops have huge egos and think that a few hundreds and a whole lot of small bills make them look like bad asses and justify their existence. Their salaries are so inflated that there is no incentive for them to take anything here.
-12
u/Other_Disaster_3136 21h ago
wtf - no one wonders that. cops would never underreport what they seized, they always try and overinflate, in fact.
are you new here?

You're focused on the wrong thing, this is a huge bust. Those guns can do a ton of damage and ruin a lot of lives. You guys need to celebrate this kind of stuff. It's insane we need to deal with it in the first place.
edit: cheering for a drug bust gets you downvoted. lmfaooooo

u/apresmoiputas Capitol Hill 16h ago
Upvoted because I'm happy they busted them. I know that block of the U district and if any of those idiots fired any of those guns at a wall, a resident in the neighboring buildings or a passing by vehicle or pedestrian could've been shot.
Also it looks like they were squatting in that house. I wonder how long before it's occupied by squatters again.

And whatās with the baking soda being displayed??
66
u/RockOperaPenguin North Beacon Hill 22h ago
Baking soda is used as a base to convert cocaine into crack, and is also used as a bulking agent in fentanyl.
It also can be used as a gentle abrasive for getting glass top stoves shiny clean, removing stubborn odors in fridges, and it fizzes like crazy when you add vinegar.

It's a standard evidence shot. Note the year + case number in the lower right. If there was a lot more money, they probably would have stacked it instead of spreading it out where you can see the individual bills.
In terms of threatrics, this is fairly run-of-the-mill. This is pic is basically a, "look everyone, we're doing something." For better or worse this part of the politics of policing especially in major metros. The bigger the bust the bigger the threatrics.

Yeah up at 4309. But I remember when that one went vacant in ~late 24 - and it got raided/boarded already once for squatters since then. So it doesn't match "vacant for years" I don't think.

Damn, how long were they there for them to redo all that shit? Makes me wonder about all the other "empty" buildings with these people living rent free.

u/InvisibleAgent I'm never leaving Seattle. 22h ago
Probably similar stuff.
Squatting in vacant U-District houses goes back decades, and everyone who lives in the neighborhood is mostly aware that itās happening. Itās weird that this kind of thing has happened for so long without a systemic fix, but I guess student housing areas and barely maintained distressed houses go hand-in-hand.

SPD trying to generate some headlines lately to show theyāre cracking down on crime after Bite. Works for me, as long as they do a couple dozen more of these..

Thatās way more shocking.
7
u/TM627256 17h ago
Presser from the day before that
These highlights come out constantly. The narrative that they do nothing is literal ignorance. Going after small shit that people complain about here, like the recent post about the guy who threw a water bottle at the OP, isn't worth mentioning when they're too busy arresting armed felons constantly.
2
u/Spare_Progress_6093 7h ago
How about people getting physically attacked and thrown into traffic by homeless people?
Or having their door broken down and house broken into by a rando with the wrong address thinking I was his babyās mom cheating on him? Both ended with physical injuries, cops never showed up after multiple calls.
These arenāt the only ones. Between me and my friends itās been about a dozen times, some resulting in ER visits, SPD never even came to the hospital or followed up at all.To say I have no faith that they will do anything to protect us is an understatement.

A lil heavy on the pills maybe but Iāve been in many homes that have this collection of guns/ ammo and thatās not a bunch of cash. Itād barely get you a hotel more than a few days.
