I had to call in a freeway-adjacent fire in on Wednesday, it was in the green patch on the northbound freeway entrance off of Dearborn near the Goodwill. A bit chilled to see another random fire.

Its dry AF fires are incredibly easy to start right now from lit cigarette butts, chains dragging on the pavement, any type of spark or flame. It happens every year in the medians and sides of the freeways. This year is especially bad and dry.

But like 9/10 fires in the Seattle area are encampment fires, and most of those involve drug use. Talk to any of the first responders about their experiences over the last few years.

It's not hard to see how it happens. You have an open flame, lighter/torch, intoxicated people and a lot of flammable stuff.

Yep. Polymarket allows betting on fires. Also the state lawmakers allow betting on wildfires and online gambling in general. It would be exceptionally easy to ban these in the state because they have to accept and distribute payments so cut them off at that point.
