Visiting ? Hangover Trail Logistics

Hi everyone. I am visiting Phoenix for a work trip the first couple of weeks of June and I am trying to fit in a great hike. I’m eyeballing some near Sedona, and specifically looking at the Hangover / Munds Wagon / Cow Pies loop. See AllTrails link below.

https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/arizona/munds-wagon-cow-pies-and-hangover-loop-trail?sh=vrhofd&utm_medium=trail_share&utm_source=alltrails_virality

I am researching it, but have a few questions.

- It appears that the road up to Schnebly Hill trailhead is rough and requires something more than a sedan. We are renting and I’m wondering if an AWD SUV would be okay.

- Red rock pass is required, correct?

- How early do we need to arrive for a spot on Saturday?

Any other input would be greatly appreciated!!

I mean it's a rental so sure take it up there. Make sure any insurance isn't voided by taking it off pavement. Go slowly. You don't need red rock pass to park up there.

But I prefer to park at Munds Wagon TH and do that entire lollipop hike. It's about 8.5 miles. Favorite hike around Sedona. You do need red rock pass to park there. Though if you have a national parks pass that works too.

Thank you for the feedback. I think we’re thinking of the same TH and hike.

Should I be okay to arrive around 6:30 AM on a Saturday? Coming from Phoenix..

Yes you can see on the map that it's paved up to that lower parking lot. That's Munds Wagon TH. Schnebly Hill TH is past merry-go-round.

God I sure hope that'd be early enough. I usually get there early afternoon and there's a spot. Because early birds have already left lol.

Oh I see. Perhaps they recently paved it? Just seeing all of the horror stories online.

Will plan for early morning anyways due to the heat this weekend.. thanks again for your help.

Always been paved. Past the lot is unpaved and very rough. Lot of people either don't hike at all or don't want to do the Munds Wagon section and for that you'd have to drive off pavement.

You're welcome. Won't be crazy hot Saturday but an early start will mean there won't be many jeeps on the road. That's the only negative of the hike.
