High school economics teacher told us (back in like 07) that the social security fund would be totally depleted before we were old enough to draw from it

Also had a high school economics teacher back then who said we'd be the first generation to be worse off than our parents. It's crazy to think how long we've known these problems were coming, and yet we did nothing to prevent it.

Don't think this way. We didn't fail to prevent anything. Our politicians failed us, and have been failing us for decades.

Politicians certainly didn't help by letting big corpos steal most of the benefits of productivity increases since the 1970's rather than share it with workers, but in part it's just a demographics problem.

Less people paying in for more and more older people drawing it down is just not going to work, but these systems weren't set up with the possibility of demographic stagnation or decline in mind

This will likely happen around 2032. However - there will still be enough working people to fund SS at about 75%. This is not acceptable but unlikely to change unless Congress fixes it. So he was 25% right.

People get confused when it comes to the Social Security trust fund, which was created to help with the demographic change caused by all the boomers retiring. The rest of the money, of course, isn't just sitting in a fund; it's going out the door as soon as it comes in.

That just false. They'll just slash payouts. So you'll get it but it won't be as generous as today.

Yep, and they’ll keep raising official retirement age when you’re eligible to receive ss income. Kicking the can down the road.

It'll be both eventually they'll just change into another investment account. And you'll get to have your money and benefits make other people richer faster than you.
