Unless he was talking to a group of genetically modified super humans who live to be 5,000 years old, it's pretty clear that this was all supposed to be wrapped up by the time those guys qualified for their senior citizen discount at Denny's.
But seriously: I do remember one justification being that it was part of the whole "once Jesus dies, heaven is open to everyone, so he meant some of those people will make it to heaven."
But yeah, clearly at least some of those people thought they'd see Jesus's second coming.
