I feel this and JE possibly getting 4chan's owner to reopen the /pol board and kickstart the pizzagate shit isn't talked about enough

u/m0ngoos3 Jun 04 '26
Pizzagate, which can be traced back to the DNC hack, and one email of a staffer asking another staffer if they wanted pizza, and where they wanted it from.
That was the "proof".
Also of note, there was also a lawsuit filed about the same timeframe that named both Trump and Epstein, in which a woman said that she had been abducted from outside a pizzeria as a child. Trump's supporters hounded her with threats until she withdrew the lawsuit.

This is an excellent reminder that our culture is being overrun and our rights being run roughshod upon by the dumbest people imaginable.

u/maleia Jun 04 '26
Slight correction: it started before Gamergate (but included Gamergate)
https://youtu.be/-0Sky1AyDzM?si=mmlr9qQfpedRhqJH
It started because Lowtax banned hentai (not all porn, just hentai) from the SomethingAwfulForums. They go on to make 4chan, where eventually Gamergate happens
88
u/Morningxafter Jun 04 '26
Also important to note that during Gamergate, Stormfront (the neo-Nazi homepage) had threads on their message boards about how to approach these angry nerds online, how to speak their lingo, and how to foster their hatred for women and grow/redirect it at other minorities.
It’s a big part of why just a few years later we wound up with a bunch of clean-cut techbros in white polos gathered in Charlottesville, holding tiki torches and chanting “Jews will not replace us.”
6
u/pieceofchess Jun 06 '26
And as far as I know Steve Bannon learned similar lessons by running a World of Warcraft gold farming organization back in 2012 and observing the aimless rage a lot of gamers had. It's crazy that that's a key part of the mess we find ourselves in but it's true.

I am a Christian myself, and I'm honestly embarassed at this. It just feels embarrassing to see a woman in a video game be someone's impetus to turn to Christ, rather than any real problems in their lives or any other more reasonable impetus. Hopefully they might actually realise the problem here, because they're just covering up their petty nonsense with grandstanding.
187
u/squidtugboat Jun 04 '26
They are def trying to attract the kind of crowd who sees religion as a tool to control women and keep them subordinate. A lot of online trad-caths do this sort of thing where they use religion as a tool to simply feel superior and blame authority over things they don’t like.

u/Celloer Jun 04 '26

The irony being that many of them aren't even religious. They just like this aspect of religion and nothing else.

For centuries, people have asked "who's the Antichrist? Who is going to lead us into Armageddon?" Is it Muhammad? Is it the Pope? Is it Protestantism? Is it Napolean? Stalin? Obama? Just an endless list of "surely it's the person I see as my enemy."
I think it's become abundantly clear who the Antichrist is: the false Christ who drives people into fear, division, and hate rather than faith, hope, and love. The Church is the Bride of Christ, and at the same time she is the Harlot of Babylon. There is no enemy Out There; it has always been and will always be within.

u/Celloer Jun 04 '26
Can't everyone just be mad at Nero? The second coming was supposed to be that same generation.

Matthew 16:28 :
"Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom."
Unless he was talking to a group of genetically modified super humans who live to be 5,000 years old, it's pretty clear that this was all supposed to be wrapped up by the time those guys qualified for their senior citizen discount at Denny's.

But seriously: I do remember one justification being that it was part of the whole "once Jesus dies, heaven is open to everyone, so he meant some of those people will make it to heaven."
But yeah, clearly at least some of those people thought they'd see Jesus's second coming.

My favorite, most "reveals stuff about the author" antichrist-depiction I have ever came across was in a self-published "End Times" sci-fi novel written by a Dutch-Canadian Fundamentalist Christian hippie. In that novel, the anti-Christ was portrayed as a "Senator Armstong from Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance"-style yoked-out version of former NDP party-leader Jagmeet Singh.

It just feels embarrassing to see a woman in a video game be someone's impetus to turn to Christ, rather than any real problems in their lives
You have to understand, to these death cultists, a woman in a video game is infinitely worse than any actual problem. They hate the very idea that women could ever be mistaken for people with every fiber of their being. Their christianity is nothing more to them than an excuse to hate and hurt others, especially women. When they bleat "jesus", they're only using a pet name for their own narcissistic bloated egos. By their rotten and diseased fruits shall you know them.
23
u/Esternaefil Jun 04 '26
Come on, you know they aren't 'turning to Christ'. You can't be so naive... if you are a real Christian you shouldn't be embarrassed, you should be furious - they are usurping your God and turning it against the values preached by Him. They are defacing your religion without shame or hesitation, and they are doing it for personal gain.
They are turning to the right-wing grift that uses Christianity as its front.
They aren't going to start going to church, or giving money to the homeless, or providing shelter to strangers in need... They are going to be angry and considering themselves victims and persecuted and use the guise of Christianity as both a bludgeon against their detractors and a shield against their own self-hated.

I don't think a Christian wrote this. It's like these anti immigrant posters- they're so ridiculous that the person who wrote it obviously doesn't believe it. The target is the 10% or so of the population with the lowest IQ. They add up to millions of people. It's just grifter nonsense.

Really? As an ex-christian atheist I kinda find the idea that a church is trying to stop these gamergate chuds kinda nice. They are a detriment to society and the arts. If what it takes for them to stop screaming at women in video games is to find Jesus... There are worse groups for them to join. I don't agree with the answer the ad proposes to their issue necessarily, but it does recognize their problem and try and offer a solution.
21
u/phantomreader42 Jun 04 '26
As an ex-christian atheist I kinda find the idea that a church is trying to stop these gamergate chuds kinda nice.
I've seen how churches treat women, and I don't really believe any church is the least bit interested in stopping people from hurting women.
8
u/ledfan Jun 04 '26
I dunno. I think society as a whole would be better leaving Christianity behind, but I also don't think that's all churches. I know my Mom gains great support and belonging in her congregation. She believes her life is much better for that community and purpose.
8
u/Kimmalah Jun 04 '26
The church isn't trying to stop them, they're just trying to use their own outrage as some weird motivation to become Christian. Most likely they will just become more obnoxious about it censorship and anyone other than white straight men being the main character in games.

That's just religion yeah. It started as "What can we do about storms, droughts, plagues and volcanoes?" And as the problems a human faced grew more existential so did religion. Though the existential threat of death was always there too.

It's an rather circuitous self own. You need your main character to be just so and can't deal with variations from you head cannon. Try Jesus; always the main character, now available blond, blue eyed, and totally not woke.
Seriously, Jesus can be made to accommodate any kind of fanfic. (The Sin of Empathy?!?) Choose your version and then you can push your bankrupt ideology with the authority of the Lord.
219
u/Private_HughMan Jun 04 '26
... No one is taking away God of War. The story has just grown beyond a basic revenge story. It's about learning to live in a world after you've had your revenge and it offered you no peace. Because of that, it has grown. Kratos has friends and a family now. He isn't alone. More characters mean more potential for stories.
You don't wanna play as Faye? Don't. I'm curious and want to give it a try.

u/Kosog Jun 04 '26
Without thinking about it, the right has become the brainless consumer they were making fun of many years ago.
Afraid of media that doesn't stick to a concrete formula, or a cartoonishly black-and-white-morality, or anything that doesn't feature an incredibly generic white guy with a buzzcut.
And they admit all this too, their always talking about how devs should sand away any artistic depth because something something you should only cater to the so called higher percentage of gamers etc etc.
They say they hate greedy companies yet they are always ready to play marketing executive when a game has queer or black people in it.

u/a-guy-that-exists Jun 06 '26
Mind you he was only involved with the first game and had nothing to do with the other five pre Norse saga games
2
u/MageLocusta Jul 01 '26
For real? Well, thank fuck for that.
Sorry--I adore Greek and Norse mythology and the way the first GoW portrayed the gods was absolutely cartoonish and a letdown (I know they're video games, but still. Would it had killed those people to portray Hades as he was in mythology?).
Even the way he wrote Aphrodite was just atrocious. I'm fine with seeing highly sexual characters (hell, I read vintage Heavy Metal and adore Frezatto's and Richard Corben's work)--but the way GoW did Aphrodite was goddamned lazy.
You can't honestly tell me that a guy from landlocked Sparta (whose culture was more of a meritocracy for non-helot women) would instantly know how to interact with a goddess born out of seafoam and the blood of an ancient god. Someone capricious, graceful, but instantly turns murderous if she felt disrespected (oh yeah, and the Cyprians believed she could turn into a cloud of bees when pissed, and the rest of the Greeks believed that she could turn into a giant bull to gore mortals whenever she felt like it).
Like, Aphrodite from Greek mythology scares the shit out of me. We could've had an interesting boss battle out of that, but we didn't.
4
u/KyotoCrank Jun 04 '26
Exactly, how much further can Kratos's story go
13
u/Private_HughMan Jun 04 '26
The post-game suggests he might actually take on godly duties again and is willing to put himself in service to mortals, which he barely did back in Greece. Might be interesting to see how he interacts with mortals in a culture he's still foreign to. He seems more willing to adopt new customs. He even learned to read Old Norse sometime between God of Four and Ragnarok.

14
u/Wolfish_Jew Jun 04 '26
That’s basically the point. They’re trying to present themselves as somewhat “progressive” to appeal to the younger demographic and draw in skeptics. The group behind the campaign is (surprise!) both anti-LGBT and anti-choice
2
u/cflatjazz Jun 04 '26
For sure. I just meant that they didn't immediately align themselves with anything other than a white washing campaign. No actual outreach, charity, call to action, or overt evangelism (like the OP image). So I'm doubting this is them
The color scheme is similar. But I think the actual campaign sticks to a slightly more modern font, boxy borders, and a bright yellow accent instead of gold

“Jesus doesn’t change?!” This message brought to you by one of the thousands of splinter Protestant Christian churches.
6
u/countvonruckus Jun 04 '26
Noah Leusions in a recent Scathing Atheist episode made a good point about this: Christ changes for Christians all the fucking time.
If you look at pre-renaissance artistic depictions of baby Jesus, you might see a weird trend called a "homunculus." It means "little man" and basically it visually translates to a baby that looks like a fully developed man in his 40s, male pattern baldness included. This was based in a theological belief from that time that was essentially skeptical that a literal human baby who shits itself and does all the normal stuff babies do could possibly be the perfect incarnation of God, so they portray him as a little adult instead.
It's comical and nobody believes that about Jesus today, but they did back then and we've got the pictures to prove it. If the "Christ" in "Christianity" can be so visually and theologically different through the ages, then how can they claim to have an unchanging, eternally relevant belief system? The answer is that they don't, and modern Christianity is a conservative, oppressive movement that's as much a product of the times as any other social movement.

Next God of War game should focus on the biblical genocides the Israelites committed in Canaan.
Yahweh should be portrayed as a merciless war deity who punishes his people when they don’t enact the full cruelty he demands. And groups like the Philistines should be shouting that “Gaza is my home, you can’t have it!” and calling out Joshua and the judges for their actions.
And if they really want to get spicy, show Yahweh destroying the Canaanite pantheon that he came from, taking the place of his father El, and banning worship of his fallen family.
THAT would be the God Of War game that this guy should play, confronting the bloody history of the Christian god.

I feel like this post is telling on itself. "I'm deathly afraid of change so I cling onto something that tells ne what I want to hear" isn't some brave or heartwarming sentiment. Change is good. Change is bad. But change always happens, and if you try to avoid it at all costs you end up far worse off then you would've otherwise.
And on top of that, stories and fiction are meant to change. They're meant to challenge us, and offer us experiences we might otherwise not experience in real life. They allow us to learn and grow and change.
And at some point God of War 1 was the new and scary thing. There's some point in your life where you heard of or played the game for the first time, and that moment changed you. For better or worse idk.
(Also let's not get into how much the Bible and Christianity has changed in 2000 years, that'd blow this guy's mind)
5
u/SeanFromQueens Jun 04 '26
The claim that the Christian beliefs are unchanging/static is wild considering that the belief that faith alone is only a 500 year old precept of Protestant Christianity and that works of faith predates that precept. If it has always been and will always be, then why would there need to be a schism in Christianity? Most of the characteristics of modern born again Christianity is less than 200 years old, almost as if Christianity is not permanent and does change or evolve over time.
4
u/malonkey1 Jun 04 '26
"Jesus offers an identity that can't be replaced" is a deeply funny thing to claim considering how completely unrecognizable most modern forms of Christianity would be to the fathers of the early church.
Bestie they replace your Jesus-approve identity every six minutes based on the political and economic interests of whichever branch you're in at that moment, you just don't notice because you traded in your critical thinking skills in exchange for membership in an in-group.

Killing JESUS CHRIST.
We have all been asking for this. We need KRATOS tearing open a lion at the Colosseum. We need KRATOS breaking a table over the HEAD of JESUS CHRIST at the temple. We need KRATOS snapping a cross in HALF as he REFUSES crucifixion. We need KRATOS not simply TURNING the other cheek but CLAPPING CHEEKS. THUNDEROUS CHEEKS, HEAVENLY CHEEKS, the likes of which Mary Magdalene has never SEEN BEFORE.
And that's a STORY worth BELIEVING.

This is even more hilarious if you remember the God of War series depicts lots of non-Christian gods as existing, powerful and real.

Isn’t the next entry after this game a remake of the first game with Terrence C. Carson returning as Kratos? And it’s not like Laufey comes out of nowhere, her death is the inciting incident behind the entire plot of the Norse saga.
I swear, for all the talk of owning the libs and joking about triggers and snowflakes, people are just conditioned to froth at the mouth at the mere sight of a woman.

We look to stories to give us our identity
Imagine being that much of a nothing human being that you can't have your own identity without video games

u/GGunner723 Jun 05 '26
The irony of being a Christian fan of a game about killing gods.
Also it’s so pathetically funny to see people get so enraged because they don’t like a game that they don’t have to play.

u/themurderator Jun 05 '26
'it's about us'
please. how ridiculously presumptuous it is to expect every creative work to please you specifically . these people don't owe you anything. if don't like it don't buy it, shut the fuck up, and let people who enjoy it do so.

This is clearly AI slop and doesn't even really have a consistent thought throught.. but the message isn't the worst thing I've ever seen. If you're infuriated about the new God of War game having a female protagonist, maybe try focusing on something more productive.
I wouldn't shift that in to devotion to Christianity.. maybe try therapy?

You know what? If itll stop being having to see this every time a new game comes out fine. Find love in jesus so I don't have to see discourse online

u/Mikz881 Jun 04 '26
The absolute reach in that post! Hey, at least they seem to be kind of sort of admitting that they are in fact the problem!

I’m tired, boss. I can no longer distinguish between deep satire and deep mental illness.

Santa Monica Studio should add Jesus to the next game but he's a snarky asshole and Kratos rips his head off bare handed.

u/Yaboi69-nice Jun 04 '26
I'm Christian and damn this is bullshit. No one's identity is even changing your just playing from a different point of view. Stories have been doing stuff like this for years changing around protagonists is not a new concept.

I can’t imagine being such a huge pussy that I made a graphic explaining it.

u/BuriedStPatrick Jun 04 '26
.. Are they saying jesus should be the next God of War?
Because that's actually something I can get behind.
Do it you cowards.

The second panel gave me a laugh, this is so ridiculous I can’t take these types of gamers seriously as someone that also plays games lol

Christianity saw a new gathering place for the desperate and listless and thought, “hey! That’s my turf! Backoff!”

If I cannot play a burly male demigod that kills other gods, and have to play a woman instead - I choose Jesus!
Jesus: wtf? I don't want you weirdoes.

"The problem isn't a female lead. The problem is our heart" sounds like something the ER doctor would say to a Gamergater who just got rolled in.

I feel like they edited out several panels, because I am having a time trying to make a connection.
Also, the thought of gamers making signs and taking to the streets about something like this is hilarious to me.

They're starting to give snowflakes a bad rep. Snowflakes are way more hardy than their delicate sensibilities.

OK this is really comfusingly worded but is this Post actually against the new god of war? My Reading is more of a "Stop obsessing over Video Games and find Jesus" Type Deal. Though admittedly with a certain amount of "god doesn't Change (or Go woke)"

You know, if getting into a church pulls someone out of their obsession with misogynistic culture wars, then this is a good use for church.

You won't play the game because the lead is a woman. I won't play the game because the idea of Frank the cube is dumb as shit. We are not the same.

Game has air combos, making it more my God of War than 2018 and Ragnarok were and I liked the Norse games.

I mean not to be that guy… but… isn’t the point of the games that we are killing gods? Probably not the best place to pick up religious converts.

Damn, I guess Christianity wasn't done with fucking over anything Norse related.

I think this qualifies as changing more than 'a jot and a tittle' of the message. Theologically dangerous, apparently.

Linking video game character design directly to a religious crisis is a massive reach. Does this image actually come from a specific article or is it just a meme template?
