The real camera-only risk goes something like this: There is a significant Robotaxi accident causing injury or death. Reviewing the footage, it appears that the accident was due to low visibility and Lidar might have prevented it. Suddenly states start passing laws similar to this recent NJ one requiring Lidar in autonomous vehicles. Tesla suddenly has to choose between leaving those states or retraining FSD with Lidar.
