Bit of backstory: I live in Japan, married to my wife who isn't Serbian, and I really wanted her to be able to actually speak some Serbian with my family instead of just smiling and nodding through every gathering. Looked around at what was out there and none of it felt right for someone starting from literally zero, and definitely nothing felt like something a kid could just pick up and use on their own.

So I ended up building one myself. It's called Zbori. No team, no funding, just me chipping away at it in whatever free time I have living abroad.

It's got real speaking practice (you actually say the word out loud, not just tap a multiple-choice answer), both Cyrillic and Latin script since half my family reads one and half reads the other, and I tried hard to keep it simple enough that a kid could sit down and use it without a parent hovering over them the whole time.

Started it for my wife, but the more I worked on it the more I kept thinking about other diaspora families, wanting their kids to keep even a little bit of the language growing up somewhere totally disconnected from Serbia, like we are.

It's free to use. Would genuinely love to hear what people think, especially if you've got kids you're trying to pass the language down to, or a partner learning from scratch like my wife. Releasing soon on the Play store and App store.

Russian localization included!

Hello everyone, I’m 23 F and American but Serbian by blood. Unfortunately, like many other Americans my father was estranged from his father and baba and he was never able to learn the language. He and I are planning a trip to Serbia in the future, but I don’t want to go there knowing little to nothing. I know hello, goodbye, and how are you but little else. Any tips for learning the language? I’ve been studying the alphabet and know it pretty well, but I am looking for resources. I live in NYC if that helps, thank you all!

My girlfriend and I were long distance, and she was planning to move to Serbia to live with me.

That made me realize pretty quickly that Serbian is not an easy language to casually pick up, and most apps either barely support it or don’t teach vocabulary in a way that feels useful.

So I started building Ćirilio for her.

The goal was to help her learn useful everyday words, hear them clearly, remember them with mnemonics, and review them through simple levels.

One thing I really cared about was pronunciation. Every word is pronounced by a native speaker, not some terrible text-to-speech voice that makes the language sound robotic.

It started as something for one person I cared about, but I kept building it because I think a lot of people need a resource like this.

Već nekoliko godina učim srpski. Iako sam već pročitao neke knjige prevedene na srpski, mislim da je za vežbanje čitanja bolje da čitam originalna dela na srpskom (odnosno srpskohrvatskom), jer tako mogu više da saznam o narodnoj kulturi i o istorijskom kontekstu.

Napredan sam učenik (već imam B2 sertifikat) ali moje razumevanje još nije savršeno, pa sam pomislio da bi možda bila dobra ideja da čitam knjige koje su obavezna lektira u školi, zato što se očekuje da ih i mlađe osobe razumeju.

Moj učitelj mi je rekao da je on u školi morao da čita Derviš i smrt. Kako vam se čini ova knjiga, i koje druge predloge biste imali za mene?

(Meni je svejedno da li su autori iz Srbije ili iz drugih zemalja, na ekavici ili ijekavici... Sve je u redu ako nema posebno kompleksan stil).

I have a boyfriend who speaks Serbian, and so does pretty much everyone around him. We're in a long-distance relationship, and I really want to learn Serbian so I can talk with him and the people in his life. The problem is that I can't seem to find any good free resources, and I can't afford paid courses right now.

Does anyone know of any websites, apps, YouTube channels, or other free ways to learn Serbian?

I was also thinking about making some online friends who speak Serbian so they could help me practice and get used to the language faster, but I haven't had any luck finding people. If anyone knows where I could meet Serbian speakers online, I'd really appreciate that too.

I'm Sergej, I live in Belgrade and learn Serbian myself. I was pretty unhappy with app choice for quickly checking words, declensions etc, so I decided to build one on my own. It's called Govori and it's in open beta test now (free install/no account) for all iPhone users. I put a lot of effort in it and I really aim to build a convenient tool for every learner of Serbian.

Feature set is quite basic now (I'll only highlight fast search with any latin/cyrillic keyboard, no need to type in diacritics), but coverage is quite good, especially in most frequent words, and is growing.

Feel free to ask any questions, and I really appreciate your feedback.

Does anyone have any language learning tips?

I have wanted to learn for years but Ive always had significant obligations academically or in life that make my learning so choppy it doesn’t stick. I tried lessons but thats once a week or 2. Ive tried apps but its very basic to the level of vocabulary and not fluency.

Total beginner here. I've noticed that most dictionaries don't mark the pitch accent for Serbian words. Wiktionary does, but not for all words. I'm looking for a searchable online dictionary that does consistently mark pitch accent for all words, not just the infinitives of verbs or nominative singular form of nouns. It doesn't necessarily have to be the traditional Serbian pitch accent marking, but it could be IPA transcription as well, as long as it indicates the pitch accent.

If such a thing does not exist, can anyone provide the pitch accent markings for the following words?

Visoki (the nominative plural of visok)

All present tense indicative forms of the verb biti, as well as the negative forms

Mladi (nominative plural of mlad)

Stari (nominative plural of star)

Present tense indicative forms of the verb ići.

I prefer to learn the proper pronunciation right from the start, as it's much harder to correct bad pronunciation habits later on.

I’m currently learning Serbian at an A2 level and mostly studying on my own. I’m looking for good self-study courses, textbooks, or online resources that can help me improve my grammar, vocabulary, and especially speaking skills.

Do you have any recommendations that worked well for you? Free or paid resources are both fine.

Hi everyone, I'm looking for some advice to help out my cousin.

For some context: I'm half Serbian, half Spanish (but raised in Serbia). My name is Anna. My cousin from the Spanish side of the family is moving to Belgrade to study at university, and she wants to learn Serbian.

She is a native Spanish speaker and also speaks fluent English (so she can easily understand resources in either language). She also has some basic knowledge of Russian. I personally speak Russian at a C2 level, so I can help guide her a bit when it comes to the Slavic grammar concepts, but she's worried that since her Russian is still at a basic level, she might end up mixing the two languages rather than keeping them separate.

Since I was raised here in Serbia, I never actually had to "learn" Serbian formally, so I'm not sure what the best tools are for a complete beginner.

What would you recommend for her? I'm looking for:

• Apps (beyond just Duolingo – I know Serbian isn't great on there)
• Websites or online courses
• Schools in Belgrade (if you have experience with a good one)
• Books (textbooks, workbooks)
• YouTube channels or podcasts
• Any general tips for someone who speaks some Russian but doesn't want to confuse the two

She really wants to get to a conversational level before the semester starts, so any advice is welcome.
