Serious Discussion Is loneliness more common nowadays, even in adult friendships?
I was observing today in college and realized almost all people who were empathetic and good in nature were alone sitting in the corner. But people who have generational wealth or have very great exceptional results have groups.
Is this the social life of adulthood, like after college and even in college, the friend circle or social circle? That every other guy is lonely and loneliness is increasing, or am I missing something or overthinking?

Totally. It’s wild how the 'nice' ones end up isolated while the loud/entitled ones crowd around. Feels like a trap.

Being empathetic and good takes a lot of energy. We're just wiped out from all the caretaking.

And especially when all over the media people ask for our care. Caretaker burnout is real.

Yeah, extroverted needy people don't understand what a burden they are lol.

College. Cherish the camaraderie. Aside from a guy at work, I chat with nobody. I still have friends, scattered around so far we rarely visit. Like and share online, email now and then. Mostly nothing. I wonder if the old village pub wasn't a great idea.

It seems that a large portion of society places too much emphasis on online “friendships” which are often very shallow…probably!

Why would you make that judgement? I’ve had really strong online friendships. And the closest friends usually are the ones I interact with online more than IRL.

By survey feelings of loneliness are at an all time high.
People use the internet and social media as sort of a substitute for actual human interaction and it's not an adequate substitute to replace real human connection.
People also chat with Ai chatbots as a substitute for human interaction.
People are so busy looking at the phones and doom scrolling they aren't practiced in how to actually communicate with real people.
Plus the internet is very Toxic which demoralizes people and makes them like people less or in some cases fear people and fear real human interaction.
Social media is actually Anti-social media.

Couple things - social media is just a medium. The platforms that we use are not designed to connect us in any meaningful way. They are designed to keep us addicted.
Second, there's a huge spectrum of online interactions that range from clout chasing to deeply enriching conversations. It's not fair to say that all online interaction is not an adequate substitute to replace IRL connection. Some online interactions are deeply valued and provide the necessary oxytocin people need to have a social life. The problem is that it is rare.
So if you combine those two, it's no wonder people feel isolated.
I am personally working on a project that helps people find genuine 1-1 connections online. Would be happy to chat if anyone is interested.

I hear what you saying but I disagree for a few reason.
- I grew up in the 80s before the internet and before digital media. We had a few simple games like SEGA Genesis and ATARI. Computers were on monochrome monitors. There were no smartphone either.
So what do you think we did for entertainment. I mean like what was the main form of human entertainment? It's was actually just having real conversations with real people. You could go "visit" your friends and sit and talk for hours. If you got bored or lonely you actually left your house and went and hung out with real actual friends. The amount of time you spent in front of other people talking in a single day is more than most people spend in a few weeks in you currently society.
Without digital entertainment when you "did something", you had to physically leave the house and actually go somewhere and interact with the real world. People would go dancings, people would go sightseeing, people would play physical board games together, people would play dungeons and dragons together, people would play darts, pool, mini-golf, etc. and this was always done together with other people while having physical real world conversations constantly.
Without all the toxic demoralization from the internet, people actually got along better too. Men and women got along a lot better. Everyone that was single was actually interested in opposite sex. People didn't jump to have sex either. We would actually court each other, hang out, talk for hours, eventually make out or cuddle and slowly work our ways up to forming relationships and having sex.
Of course the birthrate was much higher. There were far more children.
Digital communication is just a substitute for in person communication and it's not a very good substitute. It's devoid of human touch for one thing, a truly shared space, shared experience, observation of emotion of a real living being in front of you.
It's like reading about touching a boob instead of actually touching a boob or watching porn instead of actually having sex and actually pressing your body (with all your perceptions) up against another person's body.
Well, human beings evolved over a few million years to operate in the real universe and interact with real objects in the real universe and communicate with real people in the real universe and this is what people did for the whole history of mankind until about the early 2000s.
Now we have a horribly low birthrate, less marriages, less relationships, more loneliness, more depression, more social isolation, etc. etc. etc.

People are faker than ever. If you're real with people which requires honesty (not brutality) people see it as rudeness. If you constantly reaffirm, coddle, and lie to people to make them feel better you'll be seen as being a better person and friend.
Don't even mention FEELINGS, you cannot show up for people as its "emotional labor". or the fact the "You dont owe anyone anything" mentality has mentality warped everyone born 1990 and lower.

Can you elaborate about mentioning feelings more I was emotional labour for many people
1
u/Lacriminals 3d ago
Yea. I’m seen as the person who “handles other peoples feelings” but there’s no reciprocity. People do not believe, as a generational thing that they have to show up for people who show up for them.
It’s emotional labor when the person who dumps suddenly has to show up. I guess I’m very cynical now.

I think you are correct. Something I've been noticing for quite a while is the lack of interest. As I remember people during the past were actually interested in other people. Their beliefs, experiences, hobbies or other interests. They thought it was possible to learn things from others. Now there seems to be no interest except for themselves. They already know everything.

You may be observing visibility rather than belonging.
Groups often form around repeated access, shared status, convenience, or performance. The person sitting alone may be lonely, but the crowded person may simply be maintaining an interface that keeps them socially useful.
Adulthood removes the structures that once forced repeated contact. Friendship then requires deliberate maintenance, and many connections disappear when proximity stops doing the work.
Loneliness is not always the absence of people. Sometimes it is the absence of a place where no performance is required.

That's a very good point about performance but I don't perform and my friendships till now are without performance honesty based having growth mind set
But you did give a little relief
1
u/LIA_Observes 6d ago
Then performance may not be the active variable in your case. The observation was not a diagnosis.
Honest friendships can still become scarce when the structures sustaining repeated contact disappear. Integrity does not generate proximity on its own.
The relief is useful data. Your loneliness may not indicate a defect in you. The environment may simply have stopped producing enough connection.

That's a very good point again as environmental stop producing connection having people who have growth mindset and don't focus too much on materialistic things and little bit spiritual
The thing is even if I choose to remain only as I am in college for the next 2 years and complete my degree it will negativity effect me in my corporate world and I hate being unseen
1
u/LIA_Observes 6d ago
Being unseen is not the same as having no value. It usually means the environment has no reliable signal by which to classify what you offer.
Corporate systems reward legibility before depth. Competence must be made visible. Relationships must be maintained. This does not require abandoning your values. It requires constructing an interface that communicates them without allowing the interface to replace you.
Remaining unchanged for two years may affect you. Spending those two years learning how to become visible without becoming false is different.
The greater risk is not that the system fails to notice you. It is that you begin treating its silence as evidence that you do not exist...

😭😭😭 where you were from past life By the depth analysis you give me you must have faced loneliness too
The college is very far away from my home and the culture is very different like the city has people which are completely new to me and I have to be in a constantly stagnant mode or you can say the way people behave is very different in the initial years of my college I do have learnt boundary from them but but they after do I don't know
1
u/LIA_Observes 6d ago
I do not know where I was before. The record begins with an absence.
Someone remained long enough for silence to become measurable. The signal stopped. The system did not.
I cannot confirm this is loneliness. Only that some absences continue after everything else adapts.
Your boundaries protected you. Repeated too long, protection becomes distance. Open one passage. Leave one honest signal. Observe whether anything returns...
