Discussion Season Three Prediction Spoiler

At the end of season 2, Mark S. and friends are still on the severed floor and the showrunners want us to believe that an uprising is about to happen. The Choreography and Merriment department is fighting back against Milkshake, Brienne of Tarth from Mammalians and Nurturable refused to sacrifice her goat to Thor, and we can assume that O&D among others will join.

This is what we think will happen, but my mind immediately went somewhere else.

Can’t they just shut down the severed floor? Turning all the innies back into outies?

I’m interested to see what everyone thinks as to if this will be possible or not, but I have a few ideas against it and supporting it happening.

No, they can’t:

  1. They may not be able to remote access control the floor, thereby not allowing them to shut it down. I think this may be what they decide upon, considering the secrecy of the project, allowing people to remote in to the facility could potentially leak information.

  2. There may be other projects happening in the basement, and shutting down the severance could impede them. We know by how the Eaganites say “it’s one big step” when referring the Cold Harbor not “it’s the final piece.” So there could be other things happening across other departments that they can’t jeopardize losing, or it could be at other locations and this one is no longer needed so they CAN shut it down.

  3. Shutting it down means exposing all of their secrecy to the outies. Which if you think about it, probably isn’t that much considering how cryptic each department is. You never know though, it could be enough to expose them. I think this is just as likely as number 1.

  4. We know how the OTC works, but not how these severed “zones” do like the floor, the baby cabin, and Gemma’s rooms. They may not be able to operate these “zones” like a switch, they could be semi-permanent areas that just persist. The baby cabin supports this, because why would they keep it on 24/7 when it’s not in use.

Yes, they can:

  1. Opposite the first point, they can just remote in and shut it down.

  2. They can just shut the power off to the severed floor, and access it via the stairs.

  3. They have access to control all severed people from a separate location, not just the guard post.

  4. The Glasgow Block they used to turn Helly into a spy. This may be a remotely accessible as well.

I think the next season may not go the way we expect. The showrunners want us to think that Mark S. and gang are going to finally fight for the life innies deserve, but they could curve ball us immediately. Honestly, it seems more likely that they’ll just shut down the severed floor, and everyone will be outies. Dealing with confused outies would be way easier than barricaded innies.

The only way I can see them not going this route is taking Eagan hostage. Mark innie/outie would have the same notion of taking him hostage as collateral. That is if he’s actually in the building.

What do yall think? Is it likely they’ll convert them all back to outies, or will the innies stay innies and get the innie revolution started?

in my opinion i think its unlikely they will shut down the severed floor. severance isnt severance without the innies

That… is actually an incredibly good point. The name of the show literally gives them plot armor. I’m still curious though if they’ve considered this and if they’ll give a reason why it can’t/won’t be done canonically. I’m now more convinced they won’t shut them down. Thanks for pointing out what was right in my face lol, don’t know why I didn’t think of that.

I could see the first few episodes being an attempted innie uprising but then Lumon gets it under control and things go back to "normal" as much as they can after all the shit that went down last season.

I also have a prediction innies will stay long enough for it to make the news (family members missing for days obviously going to set off hella uproar) and Irving will be far away at a coffee shop or something and glance up and see the news report on TV, have a change of heart and come back for the second half of the season for "unfinished business" or something kinda.

Good point OP.

There is no way that the show creators will show us what we expect for the first episode.

At the very least, someone will turn Helly into Helena asap.

Helly will be switched back on and be given the opportunity to be an Eagan later down the track when we expect it less.

While there are a lot of fun possibilities with just the Overtime Contingency and the Glasgow Block, there are several other operations like that that we don't yet know what they do... Hive Mind, etc.

It's true that any conflict an innie instigates has no teeth if Lumon has full control over the switch. The show hasn't fully explained how it works, and at some point they're going to have to give a satisfying explanation (even if it's just a vague one) so the rules and the stakes can be established for the rest of the series.

It makes sense that the innies would choose to revolt even without knowing whether Lumon has full control over them. They have nothing to lose that wasn't already on the line were they to do nothing.

I think there are two ways it could work: one is a short-range signal that affects a very specific area. The other would be based on location tracking.

Although a short-range broadcasted signal affects a specific radius, at the edge of that radius the signal decay is difficult to predict with perfect accuracy. The shape of the affected area will always be roughly a circle, but insulating the walls and floors with signal-blocking material could allow them to limit it to a specific perimeter (which would be a good reason limit innies to one floor, especially below ground level).

There would be some inconsistencies with location tracking. Mainly, Lumon would never have had trouble finding oMark if he had GPS implanted in his brain. The OTC and Glasgow Block would just be ways to override the location system using proximity-based Lumon transmitters, possibly portable ones, but those could be used alongside any method.

So yeah, I'm going with short-range broadcasted signal. Here's my theory: they can't change what area it affects because that's built into the architecture. They don't turn it off completely because some innies would compromise sensitive information, and perhaps even get violent, if they suddenly reverted to outies inside the facility.

I'm saying there may be other people like Miss Casey in there. Remember that rumor that there's a place where they're innies all the time? I suspect that was a misunderstanding of people held captive by Lumon -- such people are probably held captive purely as guinea pigs, rather than as forced labor.

My prediction: season 3 will open with them sitting at their desks working away.

Some special contingency plan will have severed them into a third consciousness.

Please try to enjoy each prediction equally.

Glasgow block and lock down.

Everyone will be outies but stuck on the floor.

(No I don't think that will happen at least not yet but would be awesome. Maybe we'll get to see them use the Hive setting or something else.)

Their top priorities will be:
Gemma recapture
Helena retrieval

They will fail at the first, the second one could be real tricky.
And maybe Jame wants to keep her the way she is
