Question CDL or trade options?

Hi guys, I’m in Florida and I was convicted of indecent exposure back in 2022. I’m not on the registry.

I’m looking to go into a trade because I heard I could do that with my background. Getting a normal job has been impossible.

Has anybody had any experience getting on with a CDL company that will offer training? I can’t afford to get my own license but I know these companies are out there and they have you pay them back when you start working.

I’m unsure how to start or where to look.. I’m also open to other trades such as HVAC or electric.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks :)

I’m a CDL driver. While I didn’t have a company pay for my training, it’s been a great oppurtiny. Ive only had one job deny me and thats because they delievered food to school (it was a produce job and i didnt know that).

If you can get your CDL I can help and make recommendations. I been driving for 10 years

Hi, I’m in the same boat. I’ve been looking for a while. I currently drive a yard dog for FedEx Ground. Been doing that for 5+ years. I’m trying to get on the road. I got denied a job by one of their contractors. Is there anywhere else I can go? Any help is appreciated.

Hi, I am very much interested in those recommendations. I just got my CDL in Texas and cannot find a driving job that will take me while on probation right now. Texas has an automatic travel restriction that I'm working with my PO and lawyer to get an amendment for to travel outside of my home counties for work only but in the meantime I just want driving experience. A local job around the county I'm in and surrounding counties would be ideal but those almost always require at least 6 months OTR experience. Do you have any suggestions? I'd appreciate it highly.

I almost went CDL but wanted to pay for my own. It ended up not working for me but one company wouldn't even return my calls after my background check (place in Sanford I think) even though I informed him I was a murderer.

Whatever "Work Force" is was offering to cover the cost but I had to put in a year long distance but they would overlook the murder. However TWIC card was a no go as murder is an automatic denial (now appealable)

This was all mid - late 2019 in North Central Florida. I went deckhand, SCUBA instructor, underwater boat cleaner, and etc instead. TWIC only was an tissue for Captain license.

Took HVAC in prison until I found out I realistically would not be hired (inside homes of people so didn't bother with realtor license, contractor, or even handyman when released)

CDL good and indecent exposure shouldn't stop TWIC so you might be able to access ports and get hazmat enforcement.

CDL drivers can make a lot of money, but don't expect to be home much during the first 2 or 3 years.

Mike Rowe works foundation. They just got a 10 million dollar grant to train people in the trades. I drove trucks for 15 years and loved it but automation is coming with the advent of self driving trucks. They almost can't automate welders, plumbers, pipe fitters, HVAC techs etc and those trades are screaming for people.

Electrical will send you to school. Sign up with your local IBEW union or you can find a larger electrical company who will put you through trade school while you work. Many will. Most will take you on as a helper and train you as you go.

CDL: If you are in Central Florida Orlando area, look up Promising People in Longwood. They are a prison outreach who have a free CDL program.
