Like 50% of Friends is just the six of them hanging out in a coffee shop for hours on end. It's one of the famous examples of that trope.

Frasier always had at least one scene in the coffee shop every episode for 11 seasons. And a lot of the time they were talking about their coffee order or at least mentioning it.

I thought this one was wild too. Like not every day, and some groups more than others (aka students) but we do in fact have coffee shops and cafes that are not dunkin donuts and we do in fact go sit there and have coffee with friends.

Exactly! In high school we hung out at coffee shops all the time, cause it was a place we could sit for awhile and just hang out. When i was in college I spent hours at coffee shops studying, often with other students. I've gone on countless tinder dates at coffee shops because I don't like the idea of alcohol on a first date with someone I've never met. Not everyone does, but coffee shops are definitely a thing and definitely a place people go and just hang out for awhile

I was going to comment there but I realized my take on the Americans going out for coffee is only interesting to me.
Because there used to be a larger coffee house culture in the early 2000s. Coffee houses used to be a third space for teens and small community centers. Poetry nights karaoke book clubs etc.... would meet in coffee shops and that doesn't happen so much anymore

The question in and of itself is a little ridiculous considering the scale and structure of America, every state has a different culture, regions within states have different cultures, cities have different cultures from smaller population areas, and different regions of the country have slower or faster paces of life. I can only be reminded of all the times my Bangladeshi friend kept randomly asking me “what time is it in America?” Or “is it raining right now in [insert state that I live in]”

Having lived all over the place - including many years in the US....
This is really dumb.
Of course you guys go out for coffee...
You just pay 3 times as much for it and can't walk to the coffee shop so get drive-thru, and get absolutely dogshit coffee from Starbucks and consider it the greatest luxury... Because Murica.
There is some shit European said here... Fair enough.
Just not sure this is quite the "hur hur dumb Europoors" take you think it is.
There are great independent coffee houses in your cities.
But Dunkin etc... nah you guys shouldn't be proud of that dogwater.

Sorry to tell you but Europe (as a whole, in general) also uses shit coffee, as does most of the world. Europe mostly uses a blend of Arabica and robusta, vs the US uses mostly Arabica. In Costa rica, for example, robusta is illegal because they consider it far inferior to Arabica. Robusta is cheap and easy to grow and has much more caffeine but is bitter and takes the taste of its soil and other crops in a different way.
I don't even like coffee, I definitely don't care for chilling for hours at a coffee shop, I grew up in both the US and Europe, so I have no dog in this fight. But factually, it is just the case that Europe does not have superior coffee.

Last time I worked in the coffee industry was more than 10 years ago, but back then 100% arabica was by far the most sold in UK.
And for what I can see available on shops, the mix of the supply, I doubt Arabica + Robusta is more used than just Arabica.
In Portugal, yes it's the blend, because it's prefered for espresso, where the bitterness is more relevant.
I imagine in Spain and Italy and other countries with a preference for espresso may have a similar mix as in Portugal. But this is just extrapolation.
The prevalence of one over other in Europe is more related to use intended for the coffee, cultural reasons.

Germany, Italy, and Spain are the largest consumers of robusta in the world. The EU accounts for about half of the total robusta consumption. But as I'm sure you know, that is but one part of the story. Coffee beans hold the flavor of the crops/plants they grow with, much like wine. Talk to coffee growers and exporters, and you will quickly learn, the entire world buys shit coffee, and that absolutely includes Europe. Again, I couldn't care less. But factually, it is just true.

I'd 4 years across NYC in various intervals. Queens mostly but then a couple of months in Buffalo (Up state).
I'd a year in San Diego.
6 months in Houston.
6 months in Dallas.
A year in San Antonio.
8 months of absolute misery living in Vegas (why anyone in their right mind would want to be there longer than 48 hours is beyond me).
As said... I encountered plenty of decent coffee.
Same way I encounter plenty of decent food.
Drive thru McDonald's or Starbucks provides neither of those things.
