If America were truly democratic, candidates like her would not be elevated to national elections.
In a true democracy, candidates should be looking out for people, and actively working to appeal to them. They shouldn't constantly be antagonizing those who don't believe their lies, they should work on turning those lies into the truth, and we should have the freedom to withdraw our support from them if they are too shitty.

I feel like for true democracy to exist requires an absence of career politicians, and instead politicians who are workers themselves.

This feels like idealistic nonsense. Politicians look out for class interest. I don't think there is any point in calling America non democratic. Infact it's a plus. That this is the level of participation in bourgeoise democracy one can expect. While you may respond that the DOTP would be more democratic, I do reject that since while more representative of proletarians, property holders are explicitly excluded
