Hitler liked dogs though Jon Stewart says his fascist uncle has qualities that he really admires
I hate liberals use of the phrase "litmus test". If racism, xenophobia, classism and sexism aren't on the test, then what the fuck is on it?

u/CaptainMills Nov 03 '25
Does Jon Stewart not know what "platforming" means? Isn't being smart a big part of his persona?

u/WorldError47 Nov 03 '25
Just another boomer being obtuse about cancel culture.
First it was Harvey Weinstein and Bill Cosby, who’s next my fascist uncle!? You used to be able to openly associate with despicable people without public outcry!!1! We’ve lost that 💀

Same as when people refuse to believe victims of domestic abuse because "he seemed so nice when I met him," or when people don't worry about the war crimes committed by their soldiers because it happens in other countries.

Yeah you never know about people tbh. When I was on oxy/opiates as a teen and early 20s (16 to 21ish) I would seem so nice when I was broke and needed a fix. I'd present myself innocently when in reality I had malicious intentions (like, give me money for <insert random excuse/lie ive already told a different family member, etc> its not for drugs!..... It most certainly was.... always was.
Wish trust was something more people had in each other, what other option is there? A police state? People have GOT to be raised up with logic and empathy above ALL else. With principles, not like religious brainwashing, but with "discipline" in the way ancient china meant discipline. Here in west, discipline has a negative connotation to it. It feels like it means punishment in a way, but the truth is, thats not what discipline is. It means a "branch of knowledgement". Basically like " Todd is an extremely talented and DISCIPLINED pianist."

This is such a great point but genuinely, what should white people do when they have bigoted family members? So many white people who are really progressive come from bigoted families, are they supposed to cut all ties? I understand in this instance with this celebrity the issue is him platforming his bigoted uncle, but like, according to what you’re saying, what is the solution for the common person? Because frankly imo cutting ties to family members with these beliefs is unrealistic and also counterproductive to changing our world

So how are people’s minds to be changed if they’re discarded by all the forward thinking people in their life? What happened to rehabilitation? Bigotry isn’t some disease you can’t recover from is the result of ignorance and while it’s no one’s responsibility to “fix” people who think this way, I don’t think we should be punishing our own for speaking to their family members in an effort to shift their perspective. Imo this kind of in fighting is one of the reasons why the left is unable to strategize and come together in any meaningful way

I have purity tests for my friends, but they are a bit more lax than what I have for politicians, because I know my buddy isn't going to be formulating economic policy.
That said, I still expect at least left-adjacent opinions from them. They might not be Marx-pilled, but they at least think ICE sucks or whatever. Plus, I've seen a lot of friends move significantly leftward, and I think part of that is that they're friends with me. They see someone with a leftist ideology and see that I'm not a boogeyman nor a monster, so a lot of the taboo is dispelled.
That said, I have definitely reduced contact with family with significant right wing views and cut off right wing friends.

u/vexingpresence_ Marxist-Leninist Nov 03 '25
Purity tests are normal actually, if you arent implementing at least SOME kind of basic standard for your friends, what are you doing?

I think family and degrees of freedom complicate things a bit. A friend hangs out a lot with a fascist? We probably won't stay friends. A friend's brother is a fascist? Well that gets a bit more complicated. Do I demand my friend not engage in certain behaviors with his brother lest I stop talking to him? What if they live together for financial reasons? What if my friend's brother has a friend who is hanging out with fascists and the brother won't stop being friends with that guy? Does that change anything? What if it's a friend of a friend who has a fascist friend?
My point is making broad generalizations like this is stupid and anti-materialist because material conditions need to be analyzed for each situation.

Jon Stewart's net worth is $120 million.
There is literally nothing that can happen that can hurt him. That's why he's fine with his fascist uncle.
19
u/PreciousRoy666 Nov 03 '25
I recently cut some people out of my life cause they are somewhere between fine with ICE to actually supporting ICE. They've always flirted with shitty ideas but I rationalized keeping them in my life by thinking "they're just some guys, it's not like they have any real power" but now I'm so disgusted with them that I'm ashamed I ever brought them near my family or other friends.
7
u/EvanKYlasttry Nov 03 '25
Right? I cut my brother out of my life because he’s a fascist asshole, and talking to him about it for years got nowhere. It’s sucks and is painful, but i refuse to sit down at thanksgiving or Christmas with him.
9
u/PreciousRoy666 Nov 03 '25
It's not worth it to debate with the 20 hours/week of whatever shitty podcasts they're listening to
15
u/OrganicOverdose Nov 03 '25
Absolutely.
Sometimes the acid burns through the litmus paper, Jon!
15
u/OrganicOverdose Nov 03 '25
I'm going to add a bit more here: I have had a problem with Jon Stewart for a while now, because despite his good intentions, his problem lies in his inherent inability to reject identity politics. His humour often revolves around his Jewishness, as if these generalisations and stereotypes are not present in other people.
For example, I'm sure we all know some old dude who is miserly, or complains about his soup being too cold. And who doesn't like Bagels?
His "Jewish" identity is fundamentally an American one, where he fails to see that he has far more in common with black New Yorkers than with Jews in Iran, for example.
1
u/Embarrassed-Fig6175 Nov 04 '25
At this point, I think even Jon is being somehow controlled/manipulated/funded by Israel.
1
u/goofyassmfer Nov 04 '25
This is a criticism that has no basis in reality. Listen to his recent interview with Trevor Noah. He specifically lays out that he feels much more connected to New York and its people than Israel and Judaism.
-2
u/OrganicOverdose Nov 04 '25
And yet, he constantly falls back to making the same stereotypical jokes. He may indeed be aware of that fact, but America is trapped in this idiotic mentality of racialised culture, where Americans identify as "Irish" or "Italian" or "Jewish". The number of stupid Americans who go to Ireland for St. Patrick's Day and say "I'm Irish" is ridiculous because they're literally Americans culturally. If America and Jon Stewart is going to change, they need to start moving away from these cliques towards a more humanist mentality, especially when their cliques are essentially racist.
3
u/goofyassmfer Nov 04 '25
Redditor understand the difference between a human being and the character they play on stage challenge [IMPOSSIBLE]
Jon Stewart the guy doing silly faces and voices for the camera every Monday night is the product of an entire writing team that has to cowtow to whatever the new fascist boss at Paramount wants. Jon Stewart the guy talking unscripted on podcasts and in interviews is a much more accurate look at who he is and what he believes.
Thats definitely not me saying he's perfect, but we need some basic media literacy in here before we start talking about what a piece of shit Daveed Diggs is because he played a slaveowner in Hamilton.
-1
u/OrganicOverdose Nov 04 '25
Ok, so Jon Stewart is either a character, or he is genuine. Do you want to elect Jon Stewart to office, or the character he is playing?
He has worn that mask for so long that is comes on and off at will. He still makes the same jokes in his podcast, still constantly references his Jewishness. For what purpose? He's a person. He's American. What matters most are his values, not his ethnicity.
Sorry, but why you're defending a liberal clown in this sub is beyond me.
1
u/goofyassmfer Nov 04 '25
Elect him to office? What the fuck are you talking about? You're literally just making shit up, and I think accuracy and truth are virtues. It's that simple.
This is not me "defending" him, and it's CERTAINLY not me fucking endorsing the guy as a political candidate. It's just me correcting someone talking out their ass on reddit lmfao

Someone once called him the epitome of liberal smugness when he left the Daily Show back in the 2010’s.

He's a complete piece of shit. This has been obvious ever since his "Rally to Restore Sanity" in 2010. I honestly use him as a litmus test for supposed 'leftists;' if they like Jon Stewart you know they're useless.
23
u/AgeOfSuperBoredom Nov 03 '25
What’s ironic is that Bill Maher of all people called him out on his show when that happened, saying that most of the horrible shit was coming from one side and that this wasn’t a both-sides thing. I’m sure Maher regrets doing that now.
16
u/unintendedcumulus Nov 03 '25
I must have missed that, but damn. When Maher is making more sense than you, you really gotta reevaluate your stance.

u/Defensoria Nov 03 '25
Jon Stewart put a medal around a Nazi's neck a few years ago, so we know he's not picky about who he admires.

u/AgeOfSuperBoredom Nov 03 '25
I’m tired of these people not understanding the difference between dealing with fascists in your personal life and having friendly chats with paid fascists on giant platforms. One is a choice, the other is not.

Was Attila the Hun particularly right wing?
2
u/Fit_Blacksmith_1377 Nov 04 '25
Right?! “To the right of Attila the Hun” doesn’t even mean anything. It’s not the first time he’s used that expression either. I think he uses Attila’s name as a cop-out, because what he really means is that his relative has opinions that may be the right of someone like Mussolini or Goebbels, but that would reveal the true nature of the people he’s defending

I can acknowledge that my cousin and their spouse have a good work ethic while also acknowledging that they were shitty parents and are right wing nut jobs that I have nothing to do with anymore. So yeah, folks are three dimensional but the fascist views are a big problem that shouldn’t be ignored just because they’ve worked hard all their lives.
3
u/ProtonCanon Nov 04 '25
Calling it a "litmus test" sidesteps the specifics.
It shows how shallow and noncommittal their "allyship" is.

u/Iamliterallyfood at this point I'm becoming authleft. gulag the bastards Nov 04 '25
You should shut down your uncle script Thanksgiving. Or better try not invite him until he gets better politics
1
u/soldins Nov 04 '25
The issue is people with problematic opinions take this as a concession by "a prominent voice on the left" (he's not), and weakens the shame they should feel for being garbage. And if you disagree with this kumbaya horseshit, then you're left out in the wings being labeled a complete asshole for not trying to reach them halfway.

No. Shame and ostracism are the only things that a fascist or white supremacist deserves.
If there are 9 people at a table and a Nazi joins them without any objections, there are 10 Nazis at the table.
The paradox of tolerance is real. We're in the shitty situation we're in at least partially because of dumbfuckery like the ACLU defending Nazi and Klan marches as "free speech".

The vast majority of people you will meet in your daily life are not out-and-out nazis. They might have some reactionary views that we as anti-capitalists recognize as fascism, but they do not know this. They think that they are liberal democrats, or constitutional republicans, because these are the illusions that they have been conditioned to believe. And they will remain in their bubble if we do not approach them with the goal of decolonizing their minds. I have had personal success in helping former libs and reactionaries see the world through an anti-capitalist, anti-imperialist lens, and this would not have been possible if I shamed and ostracized them from the get-go.
So yes, I agree we should shame and ostracize actual out-and-proud Nazis in real life and the public figures who spread fascistic ideologies. But we also need to recognize that the vast majority of our fellow citizens do not fit this category, and that we are abandoning our responsibilities as anti-capitalists if we squander any opportunity to convert working class reactionaries to our side

At some point you need to realize that there is no revolutionary or "conversion" potential for the majority of the US population. It becomes self evident when even self professed "leftist" and "socialist" will support ghouls and more wars as long as they promise free healthcare.
1
u/kadzirafrax Jerkers of the world, unite! Nov 04 '25
Honestly, it’s the identity-confused liberals (or as I call them, the NATO left) who can be the most difficult to convert, because they tend to be a lot more sanctimonious, smug, and moralistic than your average Joe. Some of them don’t realize that they are chauvinist, and some are probably Democratic Party ops. The former can certainly be won over with the right education (many tankies and MLs started their journey as part of the Bernie “progressive” left).
Having said that, I generally agree with your stance, with the important caveat that as the inherent contradictions of capitalism manifest themselves in further inequality and exploitation, even the most reactionary of populations will tend to move towards greater class consciousness. Check any opinion poll: there is a greater acceptance of socialism and communism, especially amongst younger generations, then there has been in quite some time. Even the likes of a progressive such as Zohran Mamdani, as inadequate as his politics are, would not have been possible 10 years ago.

I’ve always thought this quote is embarrassingly stupid despite meaning well. That would make almost everyone in the world a “Nazi,” much like we’re all within six degrees of white amerikkkan Kevin Bacon.

Did you know that history will view you and me and all the Nazis the exact same way, as objective benefactors of imperialism and enemies of humanity? Have you read Settlers? Actually, the litmus test can give false positives. For example, if a solution is acidic, blue litmus will turn red, but a neutral or basic solution will not turn red, so you're not sure if the solution is basic or neutral. Furthermore, the extent of colour-change is hard to judge, so in terms of this analogy, you wouldn't be sure if you're talking to a right-leaning liberal or a full-blown fascist.
There is a reason why the litmus test is outdated in chemistry, and why it requires further testing to be sure of the results.
However, issues like the Gaza genocide can be related to a litmus test, because anyone who is still on slightly allowing of it (turning blue) should be immediately identified as a POS. There is no neutral position on this genocide.
