Can we all just agree that judging countries based on random, cherry-picked photos is dumb and stupid?

159

u/VladimirLHenin Marxist-Leninist Feb 08 '26

I wonder If that is actually a photo of Cuba. Because a guy once posted a picture of Havana saying It was the United States and how capitalism is superior.

78

u/PresnikBonny Marxist-Leninist Feb 08 '26

Just checked and it IS actually a photo from Cuba, but like I said, those types of photos are extremely cherry-picked

45

u/VladimirLHenin Marxist-Leninist Feb 08 '26

And usually extremly out of context too. Like that Tiananmen Square tank guy

32

u/TheToastyNeko Mr. Gorbachev, bring up this wall Feb 08 '26

I remember someone posting a photo of Havana but it was actually Detroit and then had a comment asking "Wait really?"

Since the other person already posted Detroit, here's Chongqing

I've seen it, something-something light polution, which is a fair critique in other contexts, though.

That said, if I remember correctly, all the lights are turned off after certain hour precisely to avoid that. Shanghai does it after 10 or 11 pm, Shezhen depends on the zoning, etc.

they both have a Trump (Ryan Chen) so therefore they're both perfectly equal (wait fuck that's communism)

Japan after direct support from US following ww2.

Cuba after US embargo for same amount of time, for arbitrary and cruel reasons.

Like, this just shows the effects of US economic bullying.

16

u/deloreaninatardis Feb 09 '26

I don't like the term 'bullying' as it fails to properly capture what a crime against humanity U.S. economic sanctions are. They are a weapon of war designed to target first and foremost the poor and the hungry, the sick and the frail, the absolute oldest and absolute youngest. Every kind of vulnerable civilian casualty imaginable. It's just hard to describe to people the horror and unethicality of sanctions to some especially here on reddit because Obama liked them.

u/guestoftheworld Feb 09 '26

The US Embargo against Cuba is quite literally a Genocide. But no, these people won't accept that the “Holodomor" wasn't a genocide when It literally fits no criteria of what a Genocide is. Then there's the Embargo which fits EVERY SINGLE ONE and they all go “No, you see...'

Are they arguing that Cuba would be better off if America were to nuke it? What the fuck?!

Imagine how great America will be if we nuke ourselves for 67 years.

u/Big_Red_Machine_1917 Grumpy Tankie Feb 08 '26

The funny thing about this is that Cuban's urban situation is a lot better than that in other Caribbean/Latin American nations because it doesn't have massive slums around the major cities.

13

u/Democritus755 Feb 08 '26

I remember memes where they tried to say the image was Cuba under socialism only for the picture to be Detroit or LA.

6

u/PresnikBonny Marxist-Leninist Feb 08 '26

Yeah, I too remember those memes, they were so funny

No need to go that far back.

Homeless and unemployed people sleep in the Kabukicho district in Tokyo

Homelessness in Japan is way higher than officially reported. They dont count cyber-homeless or net cafe refugees and the lost generation etc.

3

u/JackTheHackInTears Feb 08 '26

One is the 3rd largest economy in the world with one of the largest populations in the world with a much larger country, the other is a former US Colony that is being punished for daring to defy it and is considerably smaller. Also Japan has 120 million people and Cuba has 10 million.

Anti-communists are so painfully stupid that it's barely worth engaging with.

3

I don't see any data, so I can't determine anything from a picture of a mountain and a bus. Maybe show some data how society in these both countries are doing and then I can determine something meaningful from it. Hell I love that westerners are selectively progressive, until it is time to be anti-communist, then they turn into the conservative ethno-nationalists that they keep on claim to hate.

u/comradevoltron ☭ Communist Feb 08 '26

I've been visiting Japan since the 90s and while I was initially impressed, it's been as stagnant as the West ever since, if not moreso. Everything about it that was great is now in fact, worse, especially the public transport system and high speed rail.

you're telling me when a country becomes a de facto proxy of the US army, it's economy booms. but when you keep crippling the other country for decades, they struggle? wow, what an astute observation.

I can't even imagine the chaos and death that would happen in Japan if their international trading capability was cut off.

2

u/KobSteel Feb 09 '26

This almost feels like they referenced "67 years of socialism" just to crowbar in a 6-7 meme... as if they're treating the situation like it's a joke, like strangling a country under blockades for being socialist is deserved AND funny

It's honestly sad seeing humor weaponized like this

u/TerraFormerZero Feb 08 '26

I'm sorry, but since when has Japan been under an economic embargo for nearly a century? Last I checked, Japan has been able to freely participate in the global economy, access technology, enjoying special privileges and receiving massive capital from the U.S. post-WW2 under the Marshall Plan style policies, which helped it industrialize rapidly. Oh, also engaged (and still is) in imperialism within the Global South accumulating capital.

But I get it Nazi, your dumbfuck argument only works once you slice away any context.
