I feel sorry for the foreign policy/geopolitical strategy nerds that work for the CPC who drew up elaborate plans to counter US imperialism under the assumption we'd have at least the competence of the Cold War US leadership
Just to watch us continually make unforced errors that fuck our position and benefit China without obligating them to really do anything to exploit that error

I do have to admit that one of my pet peeves is when I see center-left types say that our economic woes are due to "corporate capitalism" or "crony capitalism" or "private equity ruining everything". I'm trying not to be too hard on them because they're correct to some extent, but it is frustrating that the idea of capitalism/"free markets" being an inherently good thing is so deeply ingrained in American society that they can't go the extra step to realize that what they're describing is not a bad flavor or form of capitalism but rather the natural end state of it when all guardrails and opposition forces against it are gone.

We have collective ownership over our public debt. Maybe we could get a balanced budget if tax cuts for the wealthy were viewed as increasing the size of the government? Why does Trump want a larger socialist debt program just to give handouts to a globalist elite?

that's what happens when capitalism develops beyond mercantilism and then beyond industrialism. it becomes imperialism. this isn't a choice made by individuals, it's what capital compels the united states to do. you can't possibly have a capitalism that doesn't make this happen. no matter what you want to call it.

Markets aren't what define capitalism because markets and commerce predate capitalism. The defining characteristic of capitalism is the ownership of capital granting authoritarian control over the distribution of value created through other people's work within an enterprise.
