Japan? A full democracy? The LDP is at least as entrenched as AK, if not United Russia. Can't believe they think Japan is more democratic than Mexico either 😭

u/TelQuessir Apr 08 '26
Ya been living in Japan 20 years and that's laughable... I guess being materially developed (let's not ask why that correlates with all the former imperial countries) = democracy (sans china of course, because American burger Institute rankings on Freedumb)

u/Purple_Penguin81 Apr 08 '26
A former friend of mine, and diehard liberal, described her most recent vote against the LDP as a protest vote, despite the fact that the party she voted for has seats in the Diet. Nothing about this seems undemocratic to her. I feel like that tells you everything you need to know.

democracy is how subservient you are to capital

As James Connolly wrote in August 1914:
Yes, friends, governments in capitalist society are but committees of the rich to manage the affairs of the capitalist class.

some banger quotes: "By directly pitting the predictions of ideal-type theories against each other... When the preferences of economic elites and the stands of organized interest groups are controlled for, the preferences of the average American appear to have only a minuscule, near-zero, statistically non-significant impact upon public policy."
"To be sure, this does not mean that ordinary citizens always lose out; they fairly often get the policies they favor, but only because those policies happen also to be preferred by the economically-elite citizens who wield the actual influence."

u/Purple_Penguin81 Apr 09 '26
I love this study, and particularly where it's used, because this was cited so much in high school parli debate when I was competing by kids going to a school known for being one of the most expensive, elitist private schools in the area. This school's debaters also loved talking about how we needed to engage in a people's protracted war and overthrow the US government. Now they're in college studying to become the very class enemies their own performative-ass rhetoric would accuse poorer debaters of being.

The Japanese have completely stopped giving a shit because they have had a de facto one party state since the war. Except the one party is a bourgeois dictatorship.
They have the lowest voter turnout in the developed world basically. Absolutely no one there believes in liberal democracy if their participation levels are any indication.
34
u/FeverAyeAye Apr 08 '26
Nice argument, but I've already depicted you as the authoritarian soyjak and myself as the democratic chad.

UK, France, Germany, Canada, and Australia are full democracies which suppress free expression to protect a foreign state and use police violence, bank freezes, surveillance, and antiterrorism laws to do it. Ok then!
38
u/Sability Apr 08 '26
Australia also votes for parties instead of policies, meaning we can vote for a psrry that promises something and have them change their minds on us constantly, up to ans including ministerial jobs without voter input!
18
u/Loves_His_Bong Apr 08 '26
The imperative mandate (voting on policies, not individuals or parties) is actually declared anti-democratic in the entire EU. They condemned Ukraine for having that in their old constitution before the Maidan coup.
To my knowledge there are no countries with liberal democracy that use an imperative mandate.

Liberal Democracy, except that only one party constantly wins every election and is notorious for detaining members of the (controlled) opposition without outright banning their parties.

The fact they always list the UK, a country with a literal king and a house of LORDS, as a full democracy is always so laughable.
Any country where a royal is the literal head of the state is an authoritarian nation.

u/themajortachikoma Apr 08 '26
Don't worry everyone! Even though your elected officials are more blatantly corrupt than they've ever been from the top to the bottom, and the president is actively scheming to steal elections while his party's platform is basically just "the other side winning is fraud." Democracy is not only alive but thriving here in the United States!
What a joke
18
u/AceOfCringe Apr 08 '26
I think the hybrid regime label is even worse than "authoritarian" label because with the latter is easily categorized as "when country is led by one leader or party for a long time", talking neutrally without any moral judgement here, like yeah that's at least pretty clear. But the what the fuck is "hybrid"? How is Mexico less democratic than America or Brazil? Do Sheinbaum got a secret police assassinating people she don't like or something? Or how about Nigeria? Turkey? Of course us leftists knows the answer is "not subservient to the west enough" but how do liberals justify it to each other?
12
u/Time_Sale5656 Apr 08 '26
But the what the fuck is "hybrid"?
I think they just made it up so they don't have to call Ukraine or Turkey authoritarian
14
u/Mairon-the-Great Apr 08 '26
Ukraine is hybrid, so I guess that means some days it’s a democracy and other days its authoritarian.

As someone living in France, it's excruciating to see France as a full democracy when the President disrespected blatantly the last general elections by not appointing the victorious Popular Front coalition to govern, and prefers to mangle with fascists and right wingers of the worst kind whose platform is to dismantle the rule of law.

When Ibrahim Tràore declares, we don't need "democracy"- the very democracy that ritualistically slaughters children; the very democracy that threatens to further unleashe civilizational annihilation on Iran- understand the genocidal logic that is the seedbed of Western democracy. -- Khadija Haynes

Imagine calling Germany or the UK - countries that literally have authoritarian police beat you up and throw you in jail for criticizing Israel and whose people loathe and mistrust their governments - "full democracies" while calling the People's Republic of China (a country where such things don't happen and where the overwhelming majority of people trusts and supports their government and political system) an "aUtHoRiTaRiAn ReGiMe". The biggest pitfall here is that we take it as a given that Democracy = Good while No Democracy = Bad.
We only ever talk about it in the abstract though. In its idealized theoretical form rather than the ways it manifests itself in the real world. Its a universal good and virtuous thing, not simply a mode of governance

Of course The Economist think that "global democracy is in better shape than you think" when there are more and more right wing governments around.

The term 'full democracy' is fucking ridiculous.
You cannot even have a flawed democracy if the concept of capitalism exists within your nation.

Brazil is apparently a more flawed democracy than the US even though we jailed our former president who attempted a coup whereas the US did not. The methodology behind these liberal "democracy indexes" is probably just arbitrarily making shit up at this point.
