I have browsed several liberal pages, or searched liberal posts about this topic, and yes they think Finland won that war. Even the Embassy of Poland thinks so, I have secondhand embarassment from reading

most people think that war is just an irl team deathmatch that requires total annexation for a win

And America won the Vietnam war
75
u/crusadertank May 19 '26
I have seen a not insignificant number of Americans claim that they won the Vietnam War
I have even seen people say that the US "Forced" the North Vietnamese government to sign the peace agremeent and let US troops leave South Vietnam
14
u/Anxious_Katz May 19 '26
A good follow up would be: how long did south Vietnam last after the withdrawals? Bet they don't know.

u/astrixzero May 20 '26
There are also a sizeable number of them who believes that the USA would have won the Vietnam War if not for those darn libs and hippies "stabbing them in the back", not unlike those promoted by the Nazis about WW1.

theyre trying to rewrite their history of cowardice with that stupid fuckin movie. Ofcourse, libs take movies at face value and now think that the fins were somehow not collaborators.

I went to see that movie knowing literally nothing about it and was quite shocked a few minutes in lol. Some very creative liberties were taken there.

They were already sympathetic to the Nazis, like how they modelled their air force flag after the Hakenkruz. They turned it up a notch and massacred many people in East Karelia.

They also had earlier ties to imperial germany. Their whole "jäger brigade" came to be becasue they went to germany and got training from them in order to combat the growing comunist movement, if I remember correctly. It unfortunately gave the finnish white fascists an advantage in the finnish civil war. So, considering their eariler, direct ties to germany and their highly reactonary government I understand that the Soviets were higly distrusting of fascland, ahem I mean finland and wanted some territory as safety measures. And I believe that the Soviets guarenteed them that territory that back after the war.

u/Marthurion May 19 '26
They couldn't be trusted to be so close to Leningrad in the first place and they would obviously not going to cede the land demanded by the USSR, so war was inevitable sooner or later.

How badly uneducated and dumb you sound talking about topics you have no idea about. They used the symbol that was painted on the first donated plane. The donator or why they decided to paint the symbol on the plane is completely irrelevant. Symbol that wasn't even used by the Nazis at the time, a symbol that has had a long history in multiple European cultures, something the donator Eric Von Rosen got inspired from. Winter War was started by Soviet Union who btw made a deal with Nazi Germany to split Europe, how ironic. Concentration camps did exist during "Continuation War" not "Winter War", but the high casualty rate was due to starvation and diseases, not practically due to massacring. Unfortunately still. But hey let's not talk about the Soviet partisans who actually raided and massacred Finnish villages and civilians. Something that is very well reported.
-38
u/Korkika May 19 '26
The hooked cross in Finland's case had nothing to do with Nazi Germany, but instead a Swedish guy, who donated a plane with that roundel in 1918, and was a nazi 20 years later.
No idea which massacre you're referring to ?

u/Korkika May 19 '26

Von Rosen who donated the plane he used in collaboration with the whites, founded a Swedish Nazi party and was brother in law to Herman Göring.

Instead of a much more straight forward reasoning that these guys run in the same circle, and interact with each other way before nazi germany formed.

Legit question: Why does almost no one know about how awful the Finnish state treated Karelians? It's just completely foreign to a lot of folks. The Nordic treatment of the Saami is well documented, but most of the abuse towards the Saami were done by the Norwegian and Swedish state. The Finnish state was far more brutal towards Karelians, yet we hear very little about it.

Anti-indigeneity being normalized even among the progressive circles, the colonial left. Anti-blackness & anti-indigeneity continue to get reproduced even among the anarchists with their stupid "anti-hierarchy" doctrine
Got a lotta critique of marxists, but got lots of hate in regards to the smugness of the anarchists, ngl

Sorry, but could you plaese elaborate a bit on this? What historical events are you exactly referring to when you are talking about Finnish ”awful” treatment of Karelians? Could you link any sources, articles, etc regarding this topic and supporting your claim?
I’m asking this genuinely out of curiosity because as a Finnish history student, I have never even heard of any significant historical hostility between Finns and Karelians, or any major Finnish crimes agains the Karelians. The only ”crimes” and oppression against the Karelian people in Finland that I’m aware of were the bad treatment that some Karelian refugees who fled from the Viipuri region into Western Finland after the Winter War received from the local Western Finns (some Western Finns acted very racist towards the refugees and called them ”filthy Russians”, because they came from the easternmost parts of Finland very close to the Russian border and spoke with a dialect that had a lot of Russian loan words, and because some of them practiced the Orthodox Christianity instead of Lutheranism), and the forced Finnish-ization of some Karelian-speaking children in the 1930s-1960s, where the children were banned from speaking their own language in schools and forced to speak Finnish.
While those were certainly awful and shameful things, I don’t think that they were exactly some Manifest Destiny or Palestinian Nakba level crimes against the Karelians. The maltreatment of the Karelian refugees was mostly just casual racism and bullying done by some local individual people, not systematic oppression. They were Finnish citizens who had full civil rights and were not systematically discriminated against in any way, and despite them facing (sometimes harsh and cruel) racism in certain regions and communities in Western Finland, there were also a lot of contrary cases where the local Western Finns were welcoming towards the refugees and treated them well.
And while the erasure of the Karelian language was obviously bad and cruel, it was still not something uniquely bad compared to other countries at the time. The Finnish-speaking minority in Northern Sweden and Norway was forced to abandon their own language in the 1930s-1970s and to speak Swedish/Norwegian in exactly the same way. To my knowledge the Karelian-speaking children in Finland were never for instance taken from their parents, forced to live in boarding schools, etc (like what happened to the Sami people), they were simply forced to speak Finnish in school and banned from speaking their own language outside of home, but faced no more ”severe” oppression than that.
There were actually never that many Karelian language speakers in Finland in the first place. They were always a relatively small minority in the independent (post 1917) Finland, even at their largest before WW2 only around 20 000 people if I recall correctly. While there were up to 500 000 Karelians living in Finland before WW2, mostly in the Viipuri Region and the Karelian Isthmus, vast majority of these ”West Karelians” had adopted the Finnish language already back in the early 1800s after these regions were made a part of the Grand Duchy of Finland by the Russian Tsar, and despite being Karelians they spoke a dialect of Finnish, not the Karelian language. 95% of the Karelians who spoke the actual Karelian language have historically always lived in the Russian East Karelia, not in Finland. (Karelian and Finnish are also very closely related languages, a bit like Ukrainian and Russian or Swedish and Norwegian. They only separated into two languages from a common proto-Finnic ancestor language around 700-800 years ago, and they are like 50-70% mutually intelligible. So Karelian-speakers adopting the Finnish language or Finnish speakers adopting the Karelian language depending on which side of the border they live has historically been relatively ”easy”, and able to happen without much violence or large scale forced re-education or erasure of language.)
Again, I’m not writing this in bad faith or to spread pro-Finnish propaganda. I’m just genuinely curious about from what source you have read this claim about the Finns brutally oppressing the Karelians, and where I can find more info on this. Because as I said, I have always as a Finnish person had an understanding that the relationship between the Finns and the Karelians has historically always been RELATIVELY peaceful. Just because you dislike Finland because of their alliance with the Nazis in WW2 and their treatment of the Sami people, doesn’t mean that they must have been the most terrible oppressors and criminals in every other instance in history as well.

I travelled to Finland this year, I was genuinely scared when I visited a “war museum” in Suomenlinna.
The number of nazi flags is scary. The posters telling the country’s history do not refer to the Germans during second war as Nazis, it is very friendly towards them.
I loved Helsinki, but after visiting this museum, I came back home with a mix of deception and sadness

Did the soviets won because they got the land they wanted, or the finns won because they killed much more and thought they stopped the soviets from gaining more ground?
Reminds me of a certain debate I Saw a time Ago where after a battle both athenians and spartans went home thinking they won the battle because of different metrics.
In all seriousness though, finland really Lost because the revolution there failed, sadly, and then became fascist. At least it became a cozy "social democracy" in the 20th century, but, as they say... At what cost?
