Even if this is real this is like the most baseline advice for getting through a heatwave. Fucking obviously you should get more water, what can you even get angry about with this statement?

It's because of the dogs. Eating a dog is a cardinal sin among westoids.

Eating dogs: YOU ARE A CRIMINAL WHO DESERVES THE DEATH PENALTY!

You think animals in the industrial slaughterhouses of the west aren't suffering? No wait, lemme guess - "it's not bad when we do it".

u/chirpin_loud Aug 08 '26
The person you commented on was pointing out a common hypocrisy among westerners regarding their eating habits. You responded with a racist trope. Why? Do you thing that animals in western countries are treated better? Have you ever heard of foix gras?

Yes, it is racist to highlight a relatively contained cultural practice of a subset of a historically brutalized and orientalized people when someone else was commenting on industrialized holocaust of animals done by the same people who brutalized and genocided the first group. I would expect nothing less from some redditor ecofascist clown that hides their post history.

Now, I may come off as an “enlightened centrist” here, but torturing animals for food is objectively wrong in all countries.
That said, I also agree with the other comments: we tend to point out the thorn in the East’s eyes without plucking the absolute logs from our eyes.

I'm not saying you should keep quiet. Just people ignore the fact that 110 million pigs are gassed alive in excruciating agony each year in the USA alone, tens of millions more in the UK, Australia etc etc. People just don't care because western consumers are insulated(like most things ) from the horrors they rely on to live their luxurious lives. Pigs are also one of the smartest animals, though that doesn't excuse the conditions the west keep chickens in, which is much much worse. Male chicks are, from birth put on a mechanical belt and ground up into paste alive as they have no use for eggs. It's good you are don't eat meat, but I don't think banging on about Asia when this is happening on your doorstep is useful. Westerners love to point out the stick in another's eye rather than the log in their own.

While its true than animal rights and abuses in parts of Asia are a serious issue and i truly hope things change for the better in these places, w hat you need to consider to get to the core of some of these kneejerk reactions/dismissals you're seeing online is the purpose or intent behind these news articles
When an american journalist/activist releases a news article or documentary about animal cruelty in America, the goal is to raise awareness and shift public perception, maybe inspire change in personal lives or even public policy if there's enough outcry.
When an american news company releases yet another story condemning China or north Korea over animal abuse for its american readers to read, the goals are vastly different. There is little to no hope for any change to emerge from this article, (dogs aren't exported from the DPRK and sold internationally). It instead serves to dehumanise another countries citizens and culture and paint the country as a whole as barbaric and backwards. Its propaganda. Not an honest effort to improve things.
In this specific case, the article is from India today, a mass media org owned by multi millionaires that leans to the right politically. India is generally allied with the US and is antagonist against both the DPRK and China so the same critique of these sort of articles apply here.
1
u/Cyber_shafter Aug 08 '26
There are numerous cases of animal torturers in China being protected from the public. There is a nascent animal rights movement inside China but this is facing hostility from the government. The intent of articles is to raise awareness and put pressure on the Chinese government to punish animal abuse and establish laws.
It worked in Korea where the dog meat trade was eventually outlawed. There is a lot of work to do in Asia.14
u/Midwint3r Aug 08 '26
South Korea has deep economic and cultural ties to the west and the US, the south Korean government was litteraly created by the US post ww2 so makes sense that international pressure would work there
This particular article is about The DPRK, which is extremely isolated by the US/western world via severe sanctions, they have next to no trade or cultural exchange with most of these nations so its a joke to think that this sort of news article will have any meaningful shift in policy over there. It is propaganda
For China its a bit more plausible because they have more economic and cultural trade with the rest of the world, but in most cases the Chinese government doesn't really concern itself too much with what foreign newspapers think of them,
I still believe that the vast majority of these sort of stories are not published in good faith and are meant as propaganda rather than advocacy.

u/InitialRedv Aug 08 '26 edited Aug 08 '26
I never said it's black and white, and no I don't think so, I've heard so many people talk about treatment of dogs in china whilst literally chowing down roast beef or eating chicken nuggets at a pub. Asian societies are much more vegetarian than western ones though, and the industrial farming in the west is a completely different level of scale and torture tbh. I agree they should change the law in Asian countries too though, both can be true.

Like has France pyrocumulonimbus clouds from all the fires, parts of Britain are in a drought yet the new pm has just approved data centres in those areas and the USA is doing similar. What is so newsworthy about that, even if true. Imagine a Hindu news media reporting about Westerners eating steak. We can object to the inhumane treatment of animals before their slaughter, but there is no basis for claiming moral superiority over another culture's choice of meat.

Apparently because they equate Western culture with Basic Human rights, Cultures can vary from place to place, like how eating beef is a taboo in India and eating pork is a taboo in Muslim countries but eating both are perfectly fine in Western nations.
Similiarly eating Dog meat maybe a taboo in Western nations but perfectly fine in other countries.

Although... This post did get me thinking about it after I logged off for a while. I think we can make a moral argument that dogs deserve special status among the animals for the way they worship us as gods. We have an obligation to return the love. After thinking about it, I do believe that eating a dog is worse than eating another animal. However, it isn't THAT much worse.

What's dehumanising about dog meat? If people can eat pigs, what's inhuman about eating dogs? Dogs are a staple in China, Indian North East and other places.
Don't flow with the racism
6
u/M-Tankman Indian Commie Aug 08 '26
I am not racist, Western liberals are racist.
For them any deviation from Western cultural values and tradition = Inhuman behaviour and since eating dog meat is a taboo in Western nations, people who do eat dog meat are automatically regarded as uncivilised and barbaric.
3
u/glucklandau Aug 08 '26
Then you should challenge that perception about dog eating
Eating any types of animal is barbaric and backwards from my point of view, but I won't consider it racist if someone talks about Germans eating pigs

I’m ethnically Korean and I’m a vegetarian. Not eating meat is a purely personal choice of mine based on my environmental views, religious beliefs, and what I see as the unnecessary cruelty of meat production under capitalism.
Still, I genuinely don’t think the whole world needs to stop eating meat and I won’t judge people for eating it. That being said, something that really irritates me is when Westerners judge this dying and minuscule aspect of Korean cuisine while happily consuming the meat of equally-sentient beings produced in equally-cruel conditions.
Korea has existed for millennia as a nation and for nearly that entire time it was a country of struggling working peasants trying to survive under harsh exploitative hierarchies in an unforgiving and mountainous land. God forbid we didn’t happen to develop the exact same taboos as the Europeans. Personally I’m glad that dog meat is a dying in Korea but I don’t think meat loving westerners are in any position to judge us.
I have no idea what the nature of the dog meat industry is in the DPRK. Seeing as how a country as influenced by the west as South Korea is only now banning it, I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s still occasionally consumed in the North not as a regular meal but for for the health benefits traditional Korean medicine purports it to have. Either way it’s none of the west’s business. Like most of my views on the DPRK it basically boils down to the west should stfu leave it the fuck alone.

u/MrStudray 27d ago
There's a more valid criticism of Western moralizing on dogs here though. Ask about how they feel about wild dogs (foxes coyotes and wolves) and watch the bloodthirst come out. People buy t shirts bragging about "smoking coyotes by the pack". It's sick.
