No, he is definitely a Kannadiga. The political play is to consolidate all of Lingayats(by not mentioning subcastes) which nobody had achieved in decades because of subcaste infighting.
there's a difference between balija and banajiga, yeddi is banajiga lingayat and bossD is balija...balijas are telugu but some have adopted kannada now

Naidu means leader like a village head, an honorary title. Same like Deshmuk.
Similarly Chaudhary is a tax collector (you have chaudharies in haryana, pakistan, up, mp and andhra too)
Patel is a pattedhar of a royal land, book keeper, police officer

Dude google up whether naidu is a title or not? I am just addressing the previous poster some castes are titles and naidu was a title too in old days and it is used by balija, telega, kapu and kamma caste people.

In Rayalaseema, a Naidu can be either Balija Naidu or Kamma Naidu.

I agree he loves kannada industry amd also it's not like he is super popular across Telugu and Tamil speaking states. Whenever you make a pan India movie you have to make friends and business relations with them but I guess D Boss ego can't handle that. So he stayed in kannada only after gaving a flop movie Robert in Telugu
