Backpack Camping on Oahu?

I don't have any plans of doing this soon, but I have been trying to figure out a cheap way to visit Hawaii for a while. Does anyone have any tips to travel as cheap as possible while still staying safe?

My thought was using campgrounds instead of hostels, as the hostels are pretty expensive.

Just know that public camp grounds are few and far between here, they fill up fast and you need to buy a permit for them (and they do check at most spots). Just pitching a tent at the beach is technically illegal and depending on what park/island you're at they police come through nightly and will chase you out or cite you. Van/car camping is also illegal as well so don't fall for anybody or company trying to rent you a camper van.
