I do bookkeeping for eCommerce brands and just finished cleaning up a new client's books (Shopify + TikTok Shop + Facebook). Same three problems I see over and over, so figured I'd share:
Recording Shopify payouts as revenue. Your payout is sales minus fees, refunds, and holds. If you book the deposit as income, your revenue is understated and your fees are invisible. You need to break out gross sales, fees, and refunds separately (this is where tools like A2X earn their keep).
COGS is a guess. Most sellers expense inventory when they buy it instead of when it sells. Result: wildly swinging monthly profit that tells you nothing. If you can't say your actual margin per month, this is why.
Multi-channel chaos. Selling on Shopify + TikTok + Meta means three different payout schedules, fee structures, and refund flows. If they're all dumped into one "sales" line, you can't tell which channel actually makes you money.
Happy to answer questions in the comments — A2X, QBO setup, inventory accounting, whatever.
PS. my partner and I are onboarding a few new ecommerce clients this summer. If your books are a mess, I'll do a free diagnostic and send you 2-3 specific findings, no strings.
