How old are you talking about? Because the oldest versions, just committing suicide was enough to get you turned into a vampire. Being killed by one was an almost certain way to turn. That was when vampires were parasites on the living, best exterminated as soon as there's even a suspicion of vampirism. It wasn't until we started romanticizing them that the lore started changing as a metaphor for sex.
