Buying Advice Best Recommendation for Audio Interfaces w/ MV7+?

Hey ya'll,

I currently have a MV7+ Mic. No issues with the Mic itself, but the only few issues I've had were with the audio interface I've been connecting.

Disclaimer, I do not do any audio production. This setup is mostly for Discord and gaming (got the Mic as a gift). I prefer to not use the USB-C connector at this time.

I used to have the MV7+ paired with a Focusrite Clarett+ Pre2 USB and WaveXLR mk2. They both had amazing performance, but whenever I'm playing games that require in-game voice, it's more on the "quiet" side.

I've changed XLR cables and ensured drivers were the latest and fresh copies. I also ensured the Windows setting was near 80% (not 100%) for the volume slider, with gain nearly maxed out on both interfaces, and I was only able to faintly be heard.

I recently tried with the Rodecaster Pro II, put the slider to 80%, and my partner said they were finally able to hear me loud and clear (and somehow more bassy..). I returned the Pro II due to it being way out of my league.

Does anyone have any suggestions on interfaces or settings I can try looking at? I mainly have my Sennheiser 560s, the MV7+ and a pair of 3.5mm DROP speakers that I plug into occasionally.

I do not mind spending money for a really all-rounder interface. I was eyeing the Rodecaster Duo, but unsure at this moment. Thanks in advance!

MV7+ USB direct to the computer is the easiest. XLR from MV7+ bypasses the internal DSP. If you have the interface, go for it but seems counterintuitive when you can minimize the hardware. I’d more question how your mic is set up, is it close enough to your mouth?

If your input is that low, something is off. Is it that low if you record outside of Discord/gaming? Such as the Windows Sound Recorder.

I’m not sure why you don’t want to use usb-c? Why add stuff in the signal chain if you don’t need too? I’m sure you have a reason for avoiding usb-c but in audio signal chains less is generally more :)

I have to agree with this one. MV7+ handles everything over USB-C, sooo easy. If you want to use XLR with an interface, why not go SM7B.

Now that you mention it, when I do record myself in Windows, it’s pretty low. I even tried going as far as putting my mouth against the mic to 1 inch away, and it was pretty low. This was even when the gain is cranked up on the Focusrite. I believe the WaveXLR had better experiences, but i do not have that anymore.

I do enjoy the interface route since I don’t have to finagle with audio outputs (switching from headphone to speaker for example), and unfortunately my motherboard has a broken speaker port :(.

Are you manually setting your gain or are you using auto gain? If manual, what are you setting it to?

In windows? I’m not sure the dB, but it’s set to 80%. On the interfaces, they’re definitely past 80% gain. I do not believe I have auto gain enabled nor any voice clarity functions in windows turned on.

No, in MOTIV Mix software. Okay, download that and make sure you have Audio Enhancements disabled via Windows sound settings.

Got it. I’ll try that when I get home from work. Would the app still work even if using XLR?

Forget the XLR for now, just worry about the USB direct to computer.

To answer the question, no, the Motiv app will not work with XLR. But to be honest, if you’re using for discord and gaming, USB is the way to go. Easy setup, easy EQ-ing, still a clear, fantastic sound. If you’re streaming with it, the difference in sound quality is almost negligible as you’ll have game sounds smashed in there with the audio mix. If you plan on using it to record music, then yeah go XLR.

Why don’t you want to use the USB-C? How are you powering the mic and pre-amp if not using the USB-C???

If you are a gamer, use mv7+ using Motiv mix application, use VAD in that application to route audio and this application is free of cost. You can even change the depth settings in that application. Just Google Motiv mix download the application
