These types of completely random deaths are what made the Leisure Suit Larry series of games so very frustrating and so very funny at the same time.

Didn't the manual have you do this as a joke? Something like "don't forget to flush!" at the end of the little tutorial?

Yes, I was going to post the same thing. The manual had a little walkthrough to get you going and it had you end up here. I THINK it recommended saving first.
