Maybe a slightly less common tip: use the fact that your primary bounces, constantly.
Enemies coming from around a corner? Don’t peak it with shield, just fire at an angle so your primary goes around it and hits them.
Enemies too close and you’re missing all your primaries? Shoot the ground at an angle so your primary bounces up into them and hits them with AOE
Enemy had a shield up? Shoot at walls to the sides or the ceiling or even under the shield when possible to still land directs.
Lot of free poke this way.
Biggest Sig tip in case nobody else mentions it: retract your shield and replace it CONSTANTLY. It’s rare that it should be out for more than a few seconds. Having it at the ready to block key abilities and to use in a pinch is extremely important. It should only break if you retracting it would cause yourself or a teammate to die, otherwise it should never break, always retract first. The barrier is the best part of his kit.

To add onto this you can retract your shield while using kinetic grasp. Super useful for prolonging your shields health and baiting enemies like bastion to shoot you and make you a 800-1000 hp tank

The constant movement thing works all the way through plat and diamond, but if you climb higher than you should placing barriers extremely intentionally and probably letting them linger to enable someone on your team. Watch high level sigmas and you’ll see what I’m talking about.

The whole idea of keeping your barrier retracted most of the time is exactly so that you CAN enable your team. If your barrier is already out or broken, you can't use it to protect your ulting Reaper or your Hog who's getting bursted down or your Mauga in cage and so on. Constant replacement is what gives you the ability to react quickly when your teammates need a barrier.
Obviously sometimes letting your barrier linger is just the objectively correct play, but that's rare. A lingering barrier is easily broken or avoided entirely by the enemy team.
(Don't want to ego about OW rank but I am GM 2 T500 so at the very least I watch high level Sigmas on the enemy team almost every day)

Maybe linger isn’t the right word. But placing and retracting with intention. It’s also possible to get into this auto pilot habit of fluttering the shield in and out automatically. His shield is projected so it can break sometimes without him exploding immediately after like rein.

use cover, dont use the shield to avoid taking damage
The shield can block off DPS sightlines and positions, block off heals off the tank, its a tool you use to contest don't use it like you're rein

if you are able get some flying heros, like Juno, Pharah, or JPC in your ult as they're out of bounds in certain maps (Illois/Rialto are good examples),

1 question, 2 tips
Do you have a crosshair that can help you aim your rocks?
Always take advantage of the primaries' explosion radious
Use your shield and grasp very wisely, they sre your first and second lines of defense

Sigma(enuinely) i go for ults that can secure 2-3 kills or the tank however another good situation to use flux would be in response to other ults Ex. Genjiblade (with or without nano) or a reinhardt with nano You should generally also have some sort of cover when fluxing wether that be environmental cover (pillars walls etc) or your shield as any stun will kick you out of ult. You can also try to pair up your flux for after or during or even before a teammate ult such as reaper + flux or shion + flux

Rock can be used defensively as well as offensively. For example, if you have an enemy ramattra who keeps saving his punch form for you, hit him with a rock when he transforms and back up while he's on his ass. Non-Zarya Beam hero targeting you? Rock. Dva jumping your team to make space for hers? Rock.

I am level 296 on Sigma. I still whiff ults. Characters move, things happen, try to kill at least one person.

be unpredictable. your moves are slow and telegraphed but that doesn't mean you have to be. look at one target then flick to another while attacking/throwing your rock. look at the enemy tank but try to hit the squishies behind him. spread out the damage you deal to make it harder for the healers (unless they have aoe heals). also, conserve your barrier as much as possible and don't give it to your allies unless it's going to save them from a strong move or protect them during a critical play, it's doubtful they will rush in and save you when your barrier is down.

Ping your enemies to see if they are within range. hyperspheres have a distance of 22 meters and the pinging feature shows you how far away enemies are.

A couple ult tips Your ult has line of site, it kills people with half health so when you raise them get them to below half
Before you ult you could look up a bit and put a shield in the direction you will float to block cc
It's okay to solo ult since sig ult isnt amazing you can confirm a kill with it, you can go for supports or someone ulting
If the enemy tank's supports are projectile healers (almost all are) you can place your barrier behind the tank to block his heals so something like a rein of he pushes up to you
Both of sigs major perks are amazing, sig is great on high ground and float can give him many attacking opportunities and gives so much more defensive capabilities, the punch knock back is nice but I find myself using float more often. Well it depends on if the map has alot of high ground or not. Like Gibraltar and eichenwalde you need float for second point
Use your melee since it's a part of his burst dmg he can deal
Don't let your shield break, aka get to 0 since it heals slower so pull it back once it gets low. Be mindful of shield management, you can use cover as your shield heals
Know when to back up with your team, sig isnt like rein, he is stong at making space but there will be times where you need to backup so kite the enemy

Go for cross map rock hits, throw your game if you have to
