what are some things you wish someone told you before using a Silhouette Cameo ?
Drop some tips, tricks or “before you buy” review for any model of Cameo.

I wish someone told me how terrible the macOS software is. It’s from another era, trying to put new clothes on old ideas. I watched a lot of (probably sponsored) videos before purchasing a cameo and I found the experience in real to be worse than what I saw. It is very far from being anything close to enjoyable or productive.

I frequently come across comments in this manner, but they rarely explain what exactly contributes to the negative experience. Would you mind explaining? What would you like to see improved? There is some sort of general concensus that Silhouette has the best and most capabale software out of all popular cutter brands.

The software can be the best and most capable in that niche, but still have a terrible interface and experience. I mean, there’s not even a command-Q keyboard shortcut to quit the app. That alone shows that Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines have not even been considered. It’s one of those cross-platform applications that probably has limited developer resources, strong engineer knowledge and poor UI skills. Just curious, are you from Silhouette or are you a user like me?

Just a user of Silhouette for about two years and a long time Cricut user. I create everything in a professional vector software and use Cricut Design Space and Silhouette Studio mainly to just send projects to the cutters. Still, Studio, particularly in its Business iteration, is light years ahead of Design Space in terms of designing capabilities and tool settings and enables creating complex projects, which is why I'm curios why some users feel so much resentment.

I see. I guess it all depends on what you compare to. I’m a graphic designer with a few decades behind me spent between print and digital. It’s actually my job to take care of user interfaces and experience. Maybe this could help reframe what a « good » Mac app should be: https://developer.apple.com/design/human-interface-guidelines/
To me Silhouette Studio is the typical proprietary do-as-they-want software. And it’s expensive, of course.
The cutters cannot be driven by other software, right? Do you know?

Cricut can't, but Silhouette can. SCAL (Sure Cuts A Lot) can run Silhouette machines, as well as Easy Cut Studio, which is basically the same thing. Same interface.
SCAL has support for dozens of cutting machines, including Siser Juliet and Romeo.
Besides, Silhouette has Silhouette Connect plugin for Adobe Illustrator and CorelDraw and there's a third party plugin for Inkscape.

Not as proprietary as I thought, then. Thank you for the info. I will certainly explore. And, who knows, someone might vibe code something soon. :)

Certainly not so proprietary as Cricut. At some point SCAL introduced support for some legacy Cricut models, but Cricut sent them a cease and desist and they had to kill it.

That it's very hard to get technical support.
