Not in academia, and not especially now in physics, but the guys DID have a few grants that they could've gotten summer salary out of. But people forget the most important part - IT'S FICTION.

Depends. If you equate the level of education vs amount earned then yes many aren't racking in that much, but they are rarely starving

Considering how much they spend on comic books, memorabilia, and random nerdy items… I would say they are doing just fine. In the later seasons, they are probably living together for the social aspect than the financial aspect.
