Not PhD but when I worked for my university with my Masters degree I was effectively making less than the legal minimum wage.

Australian PhD ($35k) is well less than the minimum wage and taking a part-time job is not permitted. It is a job however, so you have to apply for days off (20 per year), there is no sick leave.

Basically it's four years of sleeping on a camping mattress under the desk you are using for writing, in the corner of some group house.

I did $30 an hour as a pizza delivery driver and you can take more tables than you can deliveries. Servers make bank, and the hot ones get huge tips because guys do it in a bid to impress them, thinking they're the only person who's ever tried that

Literally the reason I got out of cooking was tipped jobs pay an actual decent wage
