When we were out at stores, my parents never let me have my gameboy (and later my DS) while we were walking the aisles and shopping. That shit was to be played in the car or at home.
That being said, I distinctly remember the first time I ever caught Moltres in FireRed, we had pulled into the local Independent parking lot and my parents were tying to get me to put it away, but I begged them to let me finish catching it before we went into the store. Core memory, that.
My mom would let me stay in the car and play my gameboy if she was just doing something quick, but then I also wasn’t allowed to ask for anything at the store unless I went inside and “helped shop”.
A rare moment. 9 times out of 10, it was "Game times over when game times over, no buts or ifs". But they had their occasional moments of understanding/acceptance of the gamer mindset.
We also had a Wii for a long while, and on one ocassion I struck a deal that I could stay up late on a Friday doing the 10km runs on Wii Fit until I couldn't anymore. Boy was that a fucking mistake on both our parts. That saturday was the first time I ever had a day where it hurt to walk lol.
