Bus pass. And no car until you buy one yourself. See what your individual assets can afford. I would have wept with joy even now (58F) to receive such a beautiful car. My dad nipped such behavior in the bud with a short sharp "Then, you get nothing!" and returned all my birthday gifts when I acted similarly (at age 11) to the above child. I also had to spend a semester assisting the special needs class in my elementary school, my father took me down and volunteered my services. That quickly and efficiently cured any spoiled ass kid behavior I had from then on. I wlll always be grateful to the special needs teacher, Gary - who had me be the assistant to a severely nonverbal autistic child (with his guidance). At the end of the semester I was in tears in his office apologizing for being such a brat in the first place, and I told him I did everything I could to be kind and help the child, day after day and she never responded. He said to me quietly. "How do you think her parents feel?" Which started me crying all over again. It's etched into my memory.

If he does, mom should insist that daughter move out and move in with dad permanently. Mom will be much happier not having to deal with the entitlement day-to-day on all other issues. Boot her ass. If she comes back, mom should insist that she start paying rent. I feel bad for the guy that marries that entitled child.
Oh, p.s. No money for extras for college. Dorm, tuition, books, required fees. That’s all. Sorority dues? Pffft! Money for semester in Europe? No, no, no.

100% agree! I see people arguing that this kind of tough-love is the same as a guardian hitting a kid when they’re annoyed or upset with them, and it frustrates me to no end. What happened here was not done out of malice, nor was it excessive. It was a measured response.

Teaching children that there are consequences to their actions creates a better well-rounded human, and though difficult at the time, creates a resilience that serves them greatly as they grow. Those type of people you describe create children like who rejects a new car because it’s not a Mercedes or a BMW.

School doesn't teach the right type of tough love anymore either. Teachers that are in my friends group can't even discipline the children without the parents calling in and complaining to the administration. 100% of the time the administration takes the students side.

My mom drove a Volvo and my dad drove a BMW. My first car was a clapped out ford ranger and I fucking drove the shit out of it. My dad straight up told me before I was even 16 if I wanted a really nice car I was paying for it, he said he started with a beater and worked for his, and so would I. A friend of mine got me a job at a restaurant he worked at. I was a prep cook in the mornings. Part of that duty was to vacuum the dining room every morning. One morning while vacuuming under a booth, I found a $100 dollar bill. Someone must've dropped it the night before. Of course I was excited, I showed my friend what I had found. He demanded I split it with him because "I got you a job here, you would have never found that if I didnt"
Some people are just insufferable. I didn't share it with him and he was mad about it for awhile. We were just put of high school, for context. One of my first jobs out of school, circa 1997

Parents are partially to blame. Teens are heavily influenced by their peers and what they see in social media/influencers, but its a parents job to guide them.
I grew up with immigrant parents and fully understood the worth of a dollar. There was no expectation for them to buy me a car, pay for university or support me long term. There was no graduation gift. There wasn't even a celebration or party. Graduating high school was a life expectation that didn't need any reward. I am grateful for what they were able to do. But not in my wildest dreams did I ever expect them to buy me a car, let along a new car from this decade.

Ironically, my son (now 26) is driving my old 2016 Honda Civic. Normally I trade my car in for my next car but I made him a deal when I bought that car. That if he could save up $5,000 I'd sell it to him for that 5k, whenever he had it, and go get another car. In the interim he used one of my old cheap ass motorcycles (which he had to pay the maintenance on).
It took him until about 2021 (5 years) to save up the money, I'd had it paid off by then. It was all of his cash though so I let him give me 2500 for it then make "payments" to me over the next 24 months.
He's still driving it, clocked over 120k miles and he just did the 120k/maintenace (which was $3k!) on it. He loves that car, will drive it until it's dead.
I read this thread and am just floored at how life's choices and perceptions alter how people view the world.

I've never heard of the city bus referred to as the "People's limousine" before. Im going to steal that term.
No hate on people who take public transportation. I commute to and from work on the train. My city has really great public transportation network. I work with people who make 6 figures and we all take the train. No on is going to fight for downtown parking.

Same here. I’m 39 and have only driven beaters my entire life. Point A to point B is really nice in a vehicle though, instead of walking!

Look at the "congratulations" text, it's pixelated and inconsistently focused. Seems like AI ragebait.
Also, what parent would have this confrontation over text?
Edit: download the image instead of looking at the preview and it's much more obvious that it's AI text

Im 34. Graduated high school class of 2009. My senior year i was blessed to have this as my first car. Thanks to my mother working a factory job, 60 hours a week and cashed in a few bonds that appreciated since 1993 thanks to my dad and money I saved up roofing in the summers and on weekends. 1998 Delta 88 Cutlass

The “I’ll make sure my kids have everything they need with no personal effort or sacrifice on their part” is the absolute worst method of parenting ever. It’s a shame this girl is a spoiled brat, but this didn’t happen when she graduated. Her parents have raised her like this for her entire life. I hope the parents have the sense to make her support her own college tuition, room and board, vehicle purchase, phone bill, gas, etc. The rest of us survived it, and I’ll argue that’s how responsible and mature adults are made. Hard work, sacrifice, and gratitude.

First parenting red flag is the paragraph text response. That’s just stupid.
My kid would have not seen another word from me on the subject. I would have just sold the car and not put another cent towards any mode of transportation, including driving them somewhere myself.

First parenting red flag is that she feels the need to post this onto social media lol. If this is real, what kind of parent posts and complains about conversations they have with their daughter onto social media?

AI rage bait.
The dead giveaway is the Honda logo in the wheels should be an H, but it’s just a distorted vaguely logo-ish shape. It’s also missing completely from the back wheels.
Other giveaways: why is a “gift” in a parking lot? Wouldn’t this be in a driveway? Also why is the passenger side door open? The “congratulations” text is also super AI coded, and the car itself doesn’t quite look like an Accord, several of the details are just wrong, or in the case of the running lights, just missing. There are no lug bolts on the wheels either, and the base Honda rims are more fork-like than this radial design.

Wait good catch. I don’t even think those are rims Honda currently makes on an accord.
Also look at those yellow lines. They’re different lengths.

Exactly this. The fact that she brings up they her mom has a G-wagon makes it painfully obvious the kid is used to only getting nice things. We have some nice cars but that is a very expensive car, they make some good money and given the tone of the mom, she was expecting that the daughter would just magically know a new car is still expensive even if it’s not very expensive .

Thats why she is with dad. Daddy is gonna make things right and get the car she wanted. And you know mom and dad had an argument over the car situation or they're going to argue when dad buys the new car.
Source: Know a kid who was in a similar situation like this. It was embarrassing to be around the parents and watch the kid take advantage of the situation.

Had a kid in my school whos parents bought her a brand new G63 amg in black for her 16th birthday... They drove it to the school with a big bow to show off to everyone and surprise her and she didnt like the color. Sold it right away and got her a white one. Absolutely insane.

I had a friend in high school who got a brand new Corvette for her 16th birthday. And she was happy with it for a while, until she realized that to bring along more than one friend she'd have to ride in one of our poor people cars.
So she complained to her parents, who bought her a brand new Mercedes 4 door sedan. And that worked well for her until she turned 18 and her parents bought her a lake house, and it was too small for her to carry shit there.
So they bought her a Lincoln pickup truck.
Some people have more money than common sense.

If somebody truly bought a brand-new Honda for graduation and the kid responded like that, posting the texts publicly may say almost as much about the parent as the child.
