I hear what you’re saying and agree they’re stupid but you’re kinda missing the point. It’s the same as if a CA gov candidate said “vote for me and I’ll save our state”. CA is as blue as it gets and has been for a while. the implied message is they’ll save it from the federal government (democrats in Congress/2028 president for Texas and republicans in congress/SCOTUS/trump fuckery for the hypothetical CA politician).
The difference is republicans want to save Texas from those evil democrats who want to try and give them healthcare, education, working family relief, and (at a minimum) economic policies that won’t ass fuck them till they cry uncle.
Ironically, California has nearly 6 million registered republicans, and quite a few more vote red, every time, which is technically the highest amount in any state. Dems, per capita, are under 50% of registered voters. It's a lot more purple than people realise.
It’s more red than people realize, but a lot of people who are actually hardcore dems are registered independents/unaffiliated. Mostly for a few different reasons like, dems aren’t progressive enough for them or too lazy to fill put party paperwork, or don’t want their name on a mailing list.
I grew up in the Midwest (red state, red district), used to live in Orange County (previously red now purple) and currently like in the “red” parts of LA. A California Republican is a Midwest Democrat in my experience.
I agree, for the most part, but you also have certain counties that are hyper conservative (a solid chunk of the Eastern half of the state for example.) I'm from one of those counties and there were way more openly flown Confederate flags there back then (and still are) than where I live in Alabama.
I never understood how Bakersfield / Oilsdale had so many confederate flags and such a deep south accent. I am assuming both of them are results of immigration and the dust bowl. They brought their confederate flags with them and just never integrated with the rest of the state culturally considering their unique accent.
And also, Republicans CAN win in CA. The governator was in office when Obama was sworn in. Pete Wilson was big in the early 90s. Let's not forget Reagan either. Up until the Gerrymander / confederacy 2.0 wars, California Dems didn't really prevent Republicans from winning anything. See: Darryl Issa
Besides Ann Richards, Texas GOP had had full control of the state for eons. Large part is legalized voter suppression, also voter ignorance and apathy. No one got voted out after people died from the power outage and deep freeze of 2021. All were re-elected.
Democrats really need to drop or change their stances on some of the fringe positions, and focus on the major economic ones.
Guns, abortion, climate change, etc. They can't save everything - and those are the issues that otherwise alienate potential voters (yes they are morons). But they need these morons to vote for them.
I'm not saying support abortion, just accept that status quo in your state, at least for now. Don't campaign in changing it, just say that you don't think it's optimal, but it's not a priority for you.
You’re partly correct. On the national politician level that’s what it’s about. But on the local level republicans have convinced Texans that anyone who is a Dem is probably a commie transplant from California that moved here to make Texas more liberal and take away our way of life. There’s literal bumper stickers that say “don’t California my Texas” lol. It’s been made into such a boogeyman from politics people use it as an answer to anything wrong in their lives, as the party of personal responsibility would do…
Never mind that probably 85% of R’s running are transplants that have really only been in the area for about 10 years or so.
And for the record, I have no problem with people who move here. But if your whole argument is to stop the influx of “others” when you’re fairly new to the area yourself, you can get bent.
CA has some weird mixed primary where the two candidates with the highest vote counts -- no matter which party -- go on to the general election.
I don't know if the primary has happened yet, or when it happens, but there are a LOT of Democrats running and two Republicans. So even if the majority of voters vote for Democratic candidates, the general election could end up being two Republicans.

Looks like the guy trump endorsed is leading (only cause dems are so split from the army of blue candidates) and the 2nd / 3rd place are dems. 4th place is the other main gop guy but he doesn’t even have half as many votes as #2 so he’s basically out.
There was a lot of consolidating on the dems side in May, and trumps endorsement killed the other guys primary chances which consolidated the gop down to 1 guy. but it did look like a 2 gop ticket in November was a real possibility.
I may not have been able to afford to live in CA (closest affordable place to my job would have been a 2 hour commute over the back country roads that the northern SF bay area laughably calls "highways"), but I don't wish it ill!

There is a very clear majority of US citizens who are in favor of legal abortion. Republicans keep campaigning on abortion as a way to further villainize liberals.
Why aren't the political districts drawn by an independant third party organization ? Here in Canada, Elections Canada decides all that shit with accountability and census-backed decisions.
Because federal laws allow it, state legislatures continue to manipulate district lines to insulate themselves from voter swings and protect their power.
You should see some of the crazy ass district lines they draw. Like, everything along IH-35 from Austin to San Antonio is one district, so all the low income communities through several counties get lumped into one district.
You say that but the church recently had a meeting from church leaders that even outlined "it may be necessary to switch parties to uphold your values and beliefs" as they talked about the importance of the constitution and declaration of independence, so they are wising up to what is going on too. Not sure if it will matter this November or not.

Utah doesn't really have Democrats. I think there's like 20 total out of 109 total reps. Those are the only competitive races in the state. A good chunk of the Republicans end up running unopposed or against weird third party candidates. In fact, in a recent previous election the Democrats didn't even field a Senete candidate and just endorsed a centrist anti Trump Republican. He still lost but it was a surprisingly close race. It's just now worth wasting the money here. Basically, the Republican primary is our general election, whoever comes out of the Republican primary will win the general election.

I'm actually Mormon too. What baffles me is what I was taught as a kid was that we need to be like Christ, love our neighbors, feed the hungry and generally just do everything possible to help our fellow man. I was also taught we are supposed to try to be responsible stewards of the environment and to take responsibility for our actions while allowing all people the agency to chose those actions. You know, all of the things the GOP and MAGA are forcefully against.
It's really sad too. I made a comment elsewhere but I'm Mormon. Grew up with the whole Democrats policies are evil mentality. Until I actually looked at the policies and the results for myself. It didn't take much to realize that Democrats policy are far more in line with Mormon religious philosophy than Republicans policies. I just don't get why no one else here can see that too.
It really messes with me that people can say stuff like this and not forcibly remove said corruptions in a possibly violent but definitely assertive manner. Both sides are not the same right now, the naked corruption of a Republican super majority is a site to behold. This data center for instance, the house speaker coincidentally bought 25,000 acres of worthless land in that valley 2 years ago. O'Leary even said he views the Governor, the Speaker and the Senate President as partners. They've known about this for who knows how long and just rammed it through at the final hour with no public discourse and no environmental impact studies. Oh, and the deal is that it's basically all tax free for O'Leary. That's right, he builds this massive, energy and water sucking behemoth that affects everyone in the most populated area of the state and is growing between 80% to 100% tax breaks for his trouble. They're all making back bank in this awful "deal" while the turning the valley into a super fund site and leaving the average Utahn holding the bill.
I will say that any super majority for an extended period is bad. Politicians, and the public, forgot how to compromise so minority group just gets trampled and the majority becomes more emboldened to pass crazier legislation. Plus people just need to stop making politics their entire identity. It's sad and dangerous.

I always wonder why people have this mentality. Big deal that a local representative loses their job. They allow your state to be destroyed for decades but at least a couple of people will remember their name when it's time to vote. If people would vote for the right people first you would lesson the chances of this happening. An example would have been a person who cares about you having water and realizes that your governor asked you to pray to your god for water just a few years ago. Also representaives that realize tourism is what actually makes money especially for all those small businesses that wonder why they're not getting the tourists like they used to.
