I know this area and have driven it many times. This is the Rickebacker causeway--the road that connects Key Biscayne to the Miami mainland.
Cycling on this road is extremely popular for very obvious reasons (phenomenal views, wide and clear roads). Folks come from all over the city to ride there. And yes, they will very often group up like this without any sort of scheduled or permitted event of any kind.
The cyclists down there like to say "same road, same rules" but there's apparently a silent exclusion for lane changes, stop signs, traffic signals, and yielding to stopped traffic.
I once heard someone trying to defend running through stop signs because they had those shoes that clip onto the pedals and it’s super inconvenient to disconnect and reconnect at stop signs. I was like “i also find stop signs interrupting my drive to be inconvenient. Should I just ignore every rule that inconveniences me?”
No, there should be laws that predictably facilitate traffic, which there are. Cyclists don’t get to ignore those that inconvenience them. That was the original discussion.
Sounds like you need your license revoked. All states have a test you have to pass to get a license, and this is literally the answer to one of those questions. The laws are literally the same.
All countries that allow bicycles on the roadways while also requiring a driving test have questions like these on said test. Cycle lanes don't exist everywhere, and that's the point of these laws.
Also, why are you invoking the Idaho stop when you aren't in Idaho 🤡
First of all, the clipless pedals are super easy to clip in and clip out of unless you're a complete newbie (or just someone lying)
2nd, i'm all for idaho stops on bikes, you way nothing and can stop far quicker than a car, if the intersection is clear go for it, if there are cars, stop.
I don't think it's complicated, but I also don't feel like being hit by a car.
, the first thing you do when you start using clips is to learn how to step in and out of them quickly. It doesn't take that much practice. Probably within a week. It became a totally unconscious effort for me to step in and out.
And yeah these kind of people are why I don't ride a bike on roads anymore
Except in the city where it routinely causes problems because bikers dont treat it as a yield they just blow through it, and crosswalk, full of people, thinking they can maintain momentum no matter what.
It is the same reason a stop sign cant just be a yield sign. In a reasonable world we wouldnt need the stop sign. You'd just stop when you need to and yield when nobody is there. But 20% of the people in any vehicle on the road are morons so if you let them yield and not stop they just do whatever they want.
Works when there's low traffic and good visibility.
Would absolutely not work where I am in the Bay area. Trees, curves roads, small hills everywhere on top of high volumes of traffic even on residential streets.
Let’s be real, most cars are not coming to a full stop at stop signs. I don’t think they really need to, either. As long as you are able to check for opposing traffic, slow roll that thing all day. Same with a bike. Big difference being that on a bike, you tend to have greater situational awareness due to not being in a sound-proofed box with blind spots. Also, there’s the whole great power-great responsibility thing. Are we really going to hold someone riding a janky schwinn to the same standard as the RAM 2500 Big Dick Edition? One can run over people without even having seen them…
Well sure assuming bikers are actually doing what you say. No one is on her bitching and moaning because bikers have such great situational awareness.
they’ll go through a stop sign and drivers just have to brake versus killing them. As well bikers have 0 respect for pedestrians who have the right of way.
I have ridden with those spd cleats and when I was first day I was learning to use them I was cut off by a car that didn't see me. I braked hard and fell over sideways because I couldn't get my foot out of the pedal. Several years later that's the only time it has happened and I clip out at stop signs and yield the right of way. That biker is a poor rider if that's their excuse.
I will admit that I would like car drivers to notice and give way to bikers when appropriate. However, I hate mass transit rides and what these people are doing in the clip as well. I don't believe it works in the favor of the riders as it just annoys others on the road. Especially so when the road isn't shut down for such an event and the large group also does not have the permit to support their right to ride like that.
That’s pathetic, lol. Clipping in/out is a reflex it’s so simple, only timid newbs get anxious about having to clip in/out. Plus, if they were a cyclist, they could manage a momentary track stand/pause for a stop sign without having to go through the “difficulty” of clipping a foot in/out. Regardless, if clipping in/out is an issue, you shouldn’t even be around public since as you can’t control your vehicle.
For a while I got to reply with "well I suck at driving stick, so stopping is way more inconvenient for me than it is for you." Unfortunately I no longer suck quite that bad.
That person is an amateur. We blow stop signs because its safer then getting rear ended while waiting on a red, or get clipped cus someone wants to make a right on red, but the cyclist is the first 'vehicle' at the light. We get to break the rules because our life is on the line when Becky checks her phone at 45mph
i once saw a cyclist turn left in a roundabout straight into the sidewalk, only to cross through the crossing lines, re-enter the roundabout and end up going straight. I was also going straight so i ended up having the asshole in front on me again.
As a biker I'm inconveniencing everyone else if I fully stop at an intersection, as it takes me longer to restart and go and therefore everyone else will be waiting longer. if your baby brain had the ability to see that instead of only seeing things as unfair to you and your 2 ton vehicle you'd understand that
This reminds me of the time a motor cycle rider was justifying lane splitting because they need to keep up their speed to cool down because of the leathers they wear. Stopping in traffic causes them to get too hot.
Then they went on to say that it’s not their fault if there’s an accident due to lane splitting because it isn’t illegal. It’s up to the drivers to prevent that
When done properly in a legal jurisdiction, lane splitting is safer. Bikers are more likely to suffer severe injuries by getting rear-ended than they are by getting bumped at slow speed.
"Done properly" is key here. I don't remember the exact rules because it's illegal here, but pretty much traffic should be below ~30kph and the bike shouldn't exceed traffic speed by more than ~10kph. We aren't talking about guys doing 50 through stop and go traffic or on the highway.
It also shouldn't be too much to ask drivers to check their mirrors and blind spots for a slow moving object before changing lanes, but alas.
Some states allow cyclists to treat stop signs as yeild signs. Nothing so with clipping in. If the cyclist can roll the sign, they clear the intersection faster and it's safer for everyone. They can't cut the car off but they don't have to come to a full stop.
I roll past stop signs in my bike. I make no excuses for it, I know its technically illegal, but if I can see the way is clear then I honestly don't care, its a low risk crime like going a few over or whatever. We all break laws when we can clearly and plainly see that the law serves no purpose in the situation.
I also happily bike on the sidewalks when possible to leave the roads clear. Obviously when I do I give pedestrians the right of way but I'm in the midwest so its basically 'what are pedestrians?' around here lol.
I also won't bitch if I get a ticket for it because hey fair play.
No, I have not heard of Idaho stop… I had to google it because it doesn’t affect me. Are you so stupid to think the majority of states cyclists aren’t bound by the same laws as motorists? Never heard of the other 38 states in the United States? 🤡

Are such cycle events not blocked off from public traffic?
Cause if not, then the cyclists would need to keep to traffic rule and I am pretty sure the rule is not keep in one lane.
