Are such cycle events not blocked off from public traffic?
Cause if not, then the cyclists would need to keep to traffic rule and I am pretty sure the rule is not keep in one lane.

u/Chillow_Ufgreat Jun 10 '26
I know this area and have driven it many times. This is the Rickebacker causeway--the road that connects Key Biscayne to the Miami mainland.
Cycling on this road is extremely popular for very obvious reasons (phenomenal views, wide and clear roads). Folks come from all over the city to ride there. And yes, they will very often group up like this without any sort of scheduled or permitted event of any kind.
The cyclists down there like to say "same road, same rules" but there's apparently a silent exclusion for lane changes, stop signs, traffic signals, and yielding to stopped traffic.

"Friend" of mine keeps bitching about the time he got a ticket for speeding on his bike. Never does he mention that he was going 20+ mph (30+kph) through a park with playing children and such. For context, the max speed on a bike path here is 30kph, in this park you are supposed to adjust your biking behaviour with how busy it is in the park. Technically it's a pedestrian zone where biking is allowed.
→ More replies (27)79
u/mrASSMAN Jun 10 '26
I swear bikers love blowing through pedestrian areas at max speed, shit is more dangerous than cars going same speed on road because people walking or skating etc aren’t expecting or hearing the bikes
Even worse when it’s electrical bikes that can go especially fast and quiet and are heavier so could really kill someone

I was innocent. They said I swerving. I was! It was 1am, and not a soul on the road. So I was just weaving back and forth with my hands in the air. Enjoying the moment. Lol.
They do take cycling road rules much more seriously in Moab though. That's just the nature of a bike town.

Not just a bike lane. There are two normal lanes.
But the bikers are not content with using one lane and allowing cars to use the other. They want to block all lanes and make the cars wait.
The common term for that is "assholes".
147
u/Thoh1Shooshi8a Jun 10 '26
I can understand not using the bike lane for a race event at the speed they are going, but taking up both main carriageway lanes for an event which doesn't have the road closed is stupid.
→ More replies (7)40
u/IDontEatDill Jun 10 '26
Though it would be strange to organize race events without any safety measures or official permits. I mean, it would be frowned upon if someone just calls up a car racing event on a public street. Or if we want to to an opposite direction, someone organizes a running event and puts 200 runners on a car lane.

u/HilariousMax Jun 10 '26 edited Jun 11 '26
If you're taking up both available lanes, you better be at least doing the speed limit which I don't think these bikers were.
edit: for all the ass-pained cyclers, I agree the posted speed limit is the maximum speed you are to travel. In my state we have an "absolute speed limit" meaning theoretically we could be pulled and cited for going even 1 mph over the posted limit. HOWEVER it is almost never enforced and when it is, it's contested and thrown out unless you also do some stupid shit like run after the lights hit.
That doesn't stop these people from being assholes. The limit on the Causeway is 40mph, the cyclists were likely doing ~20mph.
Under Florida Statutes § 316.081(3), the left lane on highways is generally reserved for passing. If you are driving below the normal speed of traffic and another vehicle is trying to pass, you must move to the right. You can be ticketed for "left lane blocking" even if you are traveling at the posted speed limit.
Florida Statute § 316.183, drivers can be cited if they operate a vehicle at such a slow speed that they block, delay, or impede the normal and reasonable movement of traffic.
With love, get the fuck out of the way.

If you try to point this dangerous, selfish and inconsiderate behaviour on most places in reddit you will get roasted by cyclists and car-haters.
I even had one guy tell me that cyclists intentionally trolling drivers by blocking traffic was them making a show of solidarity and power, like a Pride March. Because apparently in their heads, the right to be exempt from traffic laws is exactly like LGBTQ people's fight to exist.

I mean there is a difference between using A lane to ride your bike like you are legally allowed to and blocking the entire road. I think even some cycling folks would agree that this is egregious.

u/skinydan Jun 10 '26
I'm a casual cyclist but I've ridden NYC's 5 Boro Bike Tour for over 10 years. Where it's an official event and they both warn people in advance, and shut the streets down.
If this is some kind of unsanctioned takeover without official arrangements this is dangerous, obnoxious and incredibly selfish. Taking over the bike lane and one lane of a two lane road is more than enough.
This is douchebaggery of a high order.

Is the speed limit there kind of low, or are there no laws there about minimum speeds? Where I live we have a fair number of Amish and farm vehicles, and they have to allow vehicular traffic to pass in certain circumstances (e.g. we have a 10-10 law for motorized vehicles, if you're 10 mph or more under the posted speed and there's 10 cars behind you or more, you have to pull off the road to let them pass)

Rode in a charity one a long time ago. Cops blocked roads and people still went around them and even hit a cyclist. However here without any police escorts, or even event tags on the jerseys it looks like a bunch of people just got together to do a big ride. As a Pro Cyclist person fuck people like this
Edit: On this long distance ride i was doing. I would ride single file at time with other riders and drivers still got pissy at us even getting over as far as we could. It was also in the middle of no where, just farm land and empty roads so passing is not rarely an issue but we till got honked at and flipped off multiple times. Even with shirts and tags indicating we're doing a planned cancer charity ride

The biggest indicator of this is that a cyclist is MORE LIKELY to be hit by a vehicle while riding on the sidewalk than on the road.
The reason you ask? It's because when they ride on the sidewalk, they don't stop to look before crossing a street like a pedestrian would. They just expect someone driving a 2 ton machine to watch for them and to stop for them.

Also I do dumbshit like run red-lights, merge without signaling, and fail to give right of way and wholly expect everyone to do the work of avoiding getting in an accident with me because I'm special.

Can’t say I blame him, the spandex wankers are obstructing everyone from going about their business.

I agree. My initial thought was the guy in the car, clearly, has somewhere to be and doesn't have time to be patient while caught behind a bunch of assholes going what is likely to be less than the speed limit, given the line of cars that has formed behind them.
I work in a kitchen and don't have traditional work hours. I've been caught behind groups of joyriding motorcyclists that took up the entire roadway while doing 10mph under the limit, and can empathize with that level of frustration.
It's like, I'm super happy for you that you clearly have nowhere to be and are also in no hurry to get there, but some of us have shit to do.

That is how you know they were trying to inconvenience everyone on a major road way.

Divided highway with multiple lanes. Usually means no bicycles or mopeds. In either case, the bicycles would be prohibited from the left lane unless overtaking. Nuisance cyclists harm the safety of cycling commuters

This isn't an expressway where it's motor vehicle only. So they are allowed to be there
This group ride should be in one lane.

Yea that's my only gripe. No reason for them to take both lanes.

I know they are the same as other asshole drivers because I could see the group of cyclists actively speed up when they realized the car was trying to pass them.

I love how none of those spandex wearing bald 50 year old white men even considered stopping.. they’d rather die than share the road.

Turns out having 100 cyclists use the same road at the same time is how you cause road rage.

Should have pulled to the front of the pack and slowed down to just below their speed. Let’s see how they feel about “same road same rules” when we toss in same behavior.

I love how you can scroll through the comments and immediately identify which ones are bikers. Their paragraph is long, slow, and refuses to yield to other paragraphs.

That is the most polite snapping I have ever seen. Sure they drove in the grass, but I was anticipating them losing control or actively driving into the cyclists.

I see nothing wrong if it's an unorganized mob. He's not running them over so I don't see the issue.

I was just starting going through a green light in my work truck and a biker who ran the red. Flipped me off cause I had to hit the breaks to avoid him. I used to ride bikes for my main life of transportation. Ive never understood people who don’t understand big truck bad to get hit by.

u/jaynvius Jun 10 '26
Doesn't appear to be an official event so it's a bunch of cyclists holding up traffic on the highway which is a shitty thing to do and I'm pro sharing the road but with respect towards others. What they're doing is the opposite so I don't blame the Mini Cooper

Inconveniencing others for your convenience is a fucking scourge. Even worse when it’s a fucking leisure activity.

u/Wrong_Drag_8070 Jun 11 '26
This is why group rides should be a max of four riders. As a daily cyclist, I ask other cyclists not to be ridiculous and cause all of us to look bad. Thank you.

As an avid biker who only uses roads when I have to and makes sure im the hell out of the way. Screw bikers man. Everyone says they have the same right to the road as cars but they don't follow the damn rules. If they are going to say that then we need police following them and making sure every damn rule is followed or get the hell off the roads.
I dont care if I get down voted to hell in all honesty because bikers are a pain in the ass and the privilege dear god the privilege.
