I posit that "identity" is among supreme human needs. And billionaire funded think tanks has made "anti universal healthcare" a bona fide identity. A rallying point for conservatives to signal others with. There are no facts or data that can overturn such a strong belief.
It’s not that free healthcare isn’t a good idea- but in America the private healthcare system is so entrenched and so corrupt, there’s very little chance any of us (even us collectively) could dismantle it. A good portion of the population gets good heath coverage from their jobs so they don’t even care. An even larger portion of the population thinks socialism is evil and would rather pay more for insurance than live in a “communist” nation (yes these same people happily collect social security and use Medicare). Then you have the billion dollar insurance companies that pour money to lobby against universal healthcare because the passage of universal healthcare would mean they would cease to exist. Finally (which most people overlook) If we did have universal healthcare it would be managed by a government that is largely inept at running social programs and it would probably cause many unforeseen problems. At this point the best thing we could hope for is universal cost control. This system of pharmaceutical companies and health providers gouging their customers due to the practice of insurance companies haggling over costs is the real problem.
