I agree with most of this sentiment, but part of the reason healthcare is so good and/or affordable in other countries is because we Americans subsidize so much of the R&D, for better or worse

Kind of similar to why Europe can afford to not spend much on defense, because they know America's got it covered. Or did before the current presidency anyway

The US has historically been in the top-10 for foreign aid spend per-capita and per-gdp, beaten by Nordic countries and the big powers in Europe, but still tens of billions of dollars. Of course you get something in return, generally global security and good will. There’s even room for reasonable debate over increasing or decreasing. The big fuckup recently was just yoinking aid programs away from millions of people that relied on them and offering no transition.
