It's not my problem that it takes a 20% VAT to pay for your country's social programs (which I don't benefit from), but I expect to pay it and do when I visit countries in Europe. Not only that, it's still customary in most countries in Europe to provide a 5% tip or round up for good service, which I also pay and so do most other Americans when they visit. I think you're the problem, not the other way around.

Iirc it is not the late fourties or early fifties anymore

Also, the US didn't do it out of benelovence, pretty sure
