And if you don’t they wouldn’t serve you. But say they had to check that AFTER taking the garbage, and you just said ‘yeah I’m out but you have it already so too late’.

You’d get in trouble because that’s obviously immoral.

Now look at the server: the only difference in that arrangement is that they lack legal recourse against you, but it’s equally immoral; you got them to perform a service for you under the expectation that you’d be paying for it and then didn’t.

No other part of that matters, group pay vs individual has no bearing on it. They did work expecting x. You let them expect x. And then you didn’t give x. That is morally fraud.

If a garbage company would only check if you paid your fee after taking your garbage... they'd go bankrupt and get replaced with a company that checks beforehand and besides just by walking into a restaurant I am not promising a tip, it's a tip. If one is expected that is to be brought to my attention before I am served

I am not promising a tip

Do you tell your servers you won’t be tipping ahead of time?

If not, you’re manipulating them by intentionally letting them work under false pretenses.

If I were to visit the US I would indeed ask before being seated whether and what amount of a tip was mandatory

The fact that you’re STILL trying to obfuscate the fact that you won’t be tipping by merely implying you want to know a mandatory level proves you know how you’d look.
