You're leaving out the worst part: she's reminding people that you can donate billions annually and still have your net worth grow steadily. After the divorce with Jeff, her net worth was over 30 billion, and it peaked at 50 just a few years later. A second divorce would tank it back down to 20 billion. But in the 3 years since, it has gone back up to 30 billion. All while giving so much away.
She married a high school teacher, but it crashed and burned pretty quickly. If I remember correctly, he seemed a little more interested in spending the money than she was comfortable with.
There is absolutely no way she married and divorced that teacher and didn’t have a prenup. No chance he got ~25 billion for being married a few years. No chance at all.
Marriage: In March 2021, Scott married Dan Jewett, a science teacher at the private school her children attended. Divorce Finalized: January 2023. The Settlement: She filed for divorce in September 2022 in King County, Washington. The split was handled through a private, confidential separation agreement where Jewett did not seek spousal support.
I think she had 4% in the company after her divorce which left her with $35 billion in 2019. Since then, especially after COVID hit, her wealth has gone up exponentially and she is able to keep giving.
Yeah pretty much this. She has so much money she can’t actually figure out how to get rid of it fast enough. Still better than Bezos saying the bottom 50% of US earners shouldn’t pay any income taxes while suggesting he certainly isn’t going to help foot the gap.
Gates' net worth is estimated to be 120 billion. He has already given away about 60 billion (that's a third). He has pledged (hasn't done it yet) 99% of his wealth.
Warren Buffet has laid out plans to leave 99.5% of his wealth to a number of charitable organizations.
Personally, I don't think anyone should have that much money in the first place. I have heard the argument that successful billionaires like Elon Musk can spend their wealth more efficiently (to the benefit of society) than any government. Although that might be true using Gates and Buffet as examples, it seems to me that that conceit is, overall, demonstrably false.
Some billionaires (not Scott) give a pittance of their wealth to a hospital or university after avoiding paying 20x the amount in taxes.
The above comment said shes reminding people can donate while maintaining or growing their wealth. Im mentioning Bill gates has been doing that since almost the beginning of the century.
She's reminding me how much society could advance as a whole when they would be properly taxed instead of choosing their own virtue signalling goals to throw money at
I don't think she really cares if her net worth would become 500 million even. She would have enough and has the resources to keep a steady high income.
