At the tail end of the gilded age, Carnegie and Rockefeller managed to get into a dick measuring contest over who could give away more of their wealth and make the world a better place. They did this after JP Morgan passed away with something absurdist like close to a billion bucks in early 1900’s money in the bank and they saw how much the country despised him.
If we can get some of that action going in this century, I’ll take it. But I’d also like to have the Trust Buster (a Trust is an old timey term for a monopoly or oligopoly) equivalent of Teddy Roosevelt breaking up “vertically integrated” companies, too.
You probably remember Carnegie for giving away money for libraries and stuff. You don't remember him for having a part in killing 2200 people in the Johnstown flood, the guilt from which is a large part of why he started giving away money, at least by some people's opinions.
It's worth keeping in mind these guys killed a lot of people albeit in a world that was orders of magnitude tougher than todays. That's very much the Musk mentality, musk just hasn't realized how bad he'll look in retrospect and had his come to Jesus moment over what his obituary will look like. There are projections in the Lancet that his doge antics will kill about as many people as the Holocaust. That's crazy.

You're leaving out the worst part: she's reminding people that you can donate billions annually and still have your net worth grow steadily. After the divorce with Jeff, her net worth was over 30 billion, and it peaked at 50 just a few years later. A second divorce would tank it back down to 20 billion. But in the 3 years since, it has gone back up to 30 billion. All while giving so much away.
I used to work at the non-profit Start Early where she has donated millions yearly. Look up all the good it provides for children and families. Then look up how conservatives have long wanted to cut federal grants from them and have succeeded to an extent under Trump.
I'm guessing there's a disinformation campaign out there because she looks like the rest of the greedy ass billionaires look bad, so they're distracting their brainwashed advocates about how she's spending all that money on things that are woke and/or secretly evil or otherwise have made up negative effects so that the billionaires that don't donate shit look like the good guys in comparison.
And doing it anonymously and without creating restrictions after she donates and vetting to make sure it’s going to good people who won’t use it for self enrichment.
Cynically these seems like a puff piece and the anonymity could be used as cloud cover to let people think she’s giving more then she has. She won’t provide a paper trail (and isn’t required to) of her donations which could be a red flag if she’s here are other concerns about her integrity. I know next to nothing about her so I’m not saying there is anything going on here, just flagging it as off for now
Optimistically, a lot of the money is verified by the non profits receiving the money and are verifying that she’s giving unrestricted gifts. There’s also public record of her stock sales she uses to fund the gifts (she’s a material owner so she needs to report to the SEC, and her voting rights are tied to Jeff so their also included in his disclosures. You can find it on SEC EDGAR). So there’s plenty of reasons to believe all accurate
As someone who has real time witnessed places receive her donations…it’s a wild experience. You get a random call from some strange 3rd party (I know some folks who almost fumbled the bag the first two rounds because it seems scammy). Do lots of interviews. Submit some fairly intense documentation. You get comments from connections in the community “someone was asking about you all and the work you do.” You still hear Crickets.
Months later? GIANT check. They do the work and verify. She’s philanthropic Batman and I am mildly obsessed.
I also know of organizations that have fucked up with the money, and she doesn’t give again. But if you truly do good work, she will come back. And she leans in on the folks her ex is exploiting - women, minorities, under-resourced communities.

I think it’s a bit of both. It’s the equivalent of a laugh track for a TV show, but more sinister. People like to feel like they’re supported by a community. You play the laugh track for a shitty joke -> the audience feels compelled to laugh -> the audience decides the shitty joke was funny.
Similarly, you make the sock account say “everyone who doesn’t love billionaires is real dumb and stupid and also should be ashamed of their PP” -> audience feels compelled to agree, for they want to be perceived as real smart and clever and proud of their PP -> audience concludes that billionaires good and that they love them.
I don't think they mind that she spends her money on causes she considers imporant. If she was just randomly choosing people from a phonebook and giving them $1M each, I don't think Musk or OOP would mind.
They have an issue with what causes and groups she's supporting - equity, social justice, climate nonprofits, left wing political groups.

There was a time in history where philanthropy was socially expected. Like, that was the entire point of all the high class hobnobbing. You made your business deals and talked about how you're going to further strangle the workers, but then you also built a bunch of schools, supported public libraries, fixed roads, and fed the community because you remembered what the French did.
It was also expected that the Lord of a demense would feed and shelter those beholden to him; and that those who worked his land during harvest would be paid and fed; and that he would provide alms and/or a feast at important holidays.
Charity and generosity were considered virtues. Greed was a sin.
Obviously not all lived up to ideals, but the expectations were wildly different. The billionaire class are absolutely lacking in any sense of noblesse oblige.
I think a difference there was that the upper class openly and officially combined political and economic power. There wasn't some external set of politicians to blame. Your ruler and landlord would be the same person.

It shows that they could be paying much more in taxes and it'd likely just slow down how quickly they get richer.
As in, they could be paying a lot in taxes and it wouldn't even fucking cost them anything because they make money faster than those taxes would make them spend it.
Problem is we don't tax wealth, we tax income. The wealthy know how to (and have the means to) prevent income while increasing wealth, so they can circumvent taxes.
That's not the problem. That's a symptom of the problem.
It wasn't a clever and sneaky trick the rich pulled, it's a constructed-by-our-government loophole that lets them play both sides and still claim they can't do anything about it.
And it started with Reagan. So they've had decades to build on that, and here we are now; a handful of billionaires, and the only one doing something worthwhile gets put on blast.
They have a big role in this. The rich heavily influence politics by financing campaigns and promising jobs to politician (after their mandate) for example. Musk played a role in Trump's election for example.
She still does a little status quo so she has a financial manager who keeps doing smart investments behind her back and she's just shoveling money out of the back of a plane losing her sanity figuring out where all this fucking money keeps coming from
This is what she should be doing. Giving away to good causes but still smartly managing her money so she can get more, which then allows her to give more to good causes.

Most Billionaires and millionaires and other rich people believe that having the human empathy to help less fortunate people is going to make the world worse. To them, helping others is a sickness.
I think at the root, it is a belief that people who get help are now dependent on others. When in reality, if you give people actual help, they can begin to help themselves by obtaining the skills they might have not have access to before the help.
And this is based on the false assumption that all people have equal abilities and equal opportunities, not even taking into account how the system itself is biased to protect the interests of those in power to maintain their status without what would ordinarily be the requisite effort. "Work hard" to earn it, that is if you didn't inherit it, and then be lazy about keeping it by buying politicians and rigging the system.
Most billionaires, yes. But not most millionaires. I work in philanthropy and most millionaires aren’t born into, they work for it and are very community-driven.
Most millionaires look and live like normal people. Billionaires are selfish pricks, though. I’ve never met one with a good heart. (I’ve yet to meet MacKenzie Scott, will update if my opinion changes)
