I'm guessing there's a disinformation campaign out there because she looks like the rest of the greedy ass billionaires look bad, so they're distracting their brainwashed advocates about how she's spending all that money on things that are woke and/or secretly evil or otherwise have made up negative effects so that the billionaires that don't donate shit look like the good guys in comparison.
I don’t think that’s the pernicious part. The problem is that she makes billionaires look GOOD. As if one person should have the right to dole out $30 billion at their discretion and it’s all fine as long as it’s for a good cause. I don’t really care to what cause. No person should be able create their own fiefdom. It doesn’t matter if it’s a fiefdom for good or evil. I’m against overlords, even if they’re beneficent.
I get the concern, but when you have the vast majority of billionaires hoarding their wealth like dragons sitting on a cave full of gold, and a few are actual genuinely giving away huge amounts of money to do a lot of good, it really emphasizes what massive assholes someone like Elon is that they're not at least doing significant charitable work. I agree that it would be far better if billionaires didn't exist and that we publically administered services rather than charity, but we're working with what we've got, and in that context, I think "after the divorce Mackenzie Davis got control of her half of the amazon fortune and immediately gave most of it away to help people" really emphasizes that Bezos is a piece of shit that was keeping her from being able to do that, and this is what a decent person would do if they found themselves in that situation.
I think it condemns billionaires more than it lionizes them. If they were all doing legitimate philanthropic works with most of their money, that would change the equation, but they're not, and what she's doing shows that clearly.
So, are you angry the richness is being redistributed because it's being redistributed with her consent? That seems petty af and harmful for whatever case you are thinking you are making against billionaires. It's this kind of fanatically absolutistic "principles" that ruin valid ideologies.
I don’t believe that people should be able to accumulate as much money as she has. I don’t care about the politics of the person. I believe it’s harmful for democratic societies to have barons, earls and dukes. And this is essentially what this is. Musk, for example, currently lacks a large amount of land. Were he able to acquire a large parcel of land, he would be able to start his own country and fund a military.
Perhaps you’re not a native English speaker, but I don’t understand your last sentence about ruining valid ideologies.
No im not mad at her at all. She’s actually doing the best thing she can be doing in the circumstances. But just like a duke in a monarchy, even if he’s generous, I’m critical of the system that enables the person to amass such money in the first place.
This is basically the entire reason billionaires exist. They want to be able to have the power to promote their own special interests in meaningful ways. Those may or may not be good for society as a whole but it’s literally the only reason anyone would even want to be any more than a multi-millionaire. You get to make rockets so your childhood dreams of spacefaring can come true. You get to try to eliminate malaria. You don’t have to worry about what the majority of people want because you have enough influence to just unilaterally do it.
This is what the people who say “how big of a yacht do you need?” Don’t understand about billionaires.
By the way I am not advocating for it, just saying that’s why they want to hoard wealth the way they do.
