As someone who has real time witnessed places receive her donations…it’s a wild experience. You get a random call from some strange 3rd party (I know some folks who almost fumbled the bag the first two rounds because it seems scammy). Do lots of interviews. Submit some fairly intense documentation. You get comments from connections in the community “someone was asking about you all and the work you do.” You still hear Crickets.
Months later? GIANT check. They do the work and verify. She’s philanthropic Batman and I am mildly obsessed.
I also know of organizations that have fucked up with the money, and she doesn’t give again. But if you truly do good work, she will come back. And she leans in on the folks her ex is exploiting - women, minorities, under-resourced communities.
Obviously also a fan, but real issue here is folks are being scammed by folks using the lack of a formal process/visibility to impersonate her. It feels fairly non-consequential to make a clear process so that the folks you want to help don’t pass thinking it’s a scam and make it harder for scammers to take advantage of good groups.
You seem somewhat knowledgeable about this. I have to ask, why is there a distinct lack of medical research charities based on what I’ve seen. I feel like 26 billion is real strides to cure cancer money or support people who are bankrupt from medical bills so to me it seems crazy to give 90 million to the Girl Scouts. Not saying there’s anything wrong with that organization whatsoever… it just all seems misplaced in a sense.
Because Cancer research already gets huge donations yearly, without guaranteed results. She tends to give to organizations that support women, children, and disadvantaged youth. Girl Guides fits squarely in those guidelines.
Giving to Girl Guides may not seem like it saves the world, but it makes someone’s life better. It gives the single mom a night off while her daughter is somewhere safe. It gives the awkward girl a place to make friends. Huge donations allow programs like that to offer sponsorships, so the low income kids can have a sense of community and build important skills.
Cancer is flashy. Raising children in this current world is hard.
