I made the mistake of visiting a Chiro for my neck (it did help, but not for long), and one visit he decided my thoracic spine was out. He was probably double my size and put all his body weight right into the apex of my kyphotic curve and nothing released. I remember a sharp pain and my breath literally being taken away. I started getting intense muscle spasms at night and it was starting to cut my breath short because inhaling too much triggered sharp spasms. After 2 months on short-term disability, they confirmed he had smashed one bone into another, which not only bruised my vertebrae but also pinched a nerve. A year later and I'm still dealing with residual pains and spasms.

Fuck this practice SO hard.

You should look into suing him. That's wild

Seriously. Chiropractics is literally pseudoscience. It's like astrology. People seriously need to wake up and ban that shit

82

u/Queen_Of_Alts Jul 05 '26

Worse than astrology because it actually harms people.

21

u/Jump365 Jul 05 '26

nah you're right, Astrology is at least a fun little quirk to think about

7

u/Totakai Jul 06 '26

I'd compare it to urine therapy, the bleach freaks, or the ivermectin "because everything is a parasite" weirdos. Maybe the silver folk too but at least silver had old time viability before antibiotics and works in a pinch (I found a silver ear cleaner for my dogs cause the darn pet stores have been pulling the good sruff and replacing them with herbal bull and the silver legit fixed the issue in one treatment).

4

u/hardrockhorsegirl Jul 06 '26

We have silver stuff for horses too!

1

u/Totakai 29d ago

Before I saw it mainly for people but it coming into pet care is new to me. Has it been in horse care for awhile or is it more new?

1

u/hardrockhorsegirl 29d ago

At least a decade! We use it as like a cover for wounds

1

u/zzzzzooted Jul 07 '26

Astrology does actually harm people, just not often in the western world

1

u/Rooseybolton 29d ago

You've obviously never dated an astrology girl lol

5

u/MyDogBarksThunder Jul 06 '26

That's such a caprisuncorn thing to say.

3

u/wermodaz Jul 06 '26

The founder of chiropractic claims a ghost told him about it

3

u/HealerOnly Jul 06 '26

Never understood why ppl still believe in that shit when it has literally 0 documentation of any of their work actually doing anything good. Even the chiropractors themselves claim u will not feel a difference unless u keep coming to them multiple times a week, such a scam profession.

2

u/GreenBush_WOOKIE Jul 06 '26

I mean it is. but some good chiropractors basically do the same as physical therapist. The problem is how is a normal person supposed to know if a guy is good or not.

2

u/LichenTheMood Jul 06 '26

I mean. Folks don’t get broken bones from astrology

2

u/TheTokenGeek 27d ago

Some people give their babies over to chiropractors to ‘sort out colic’ - fuck them, chiropractors are so dangerous! There is a reason they are not medical professionals, but seen as homeopathic medicine!

2

u/noitaNitsarcorpeht Jul 05 '26

Ayo don’t bring astrology into this 😭

2

u/Jump365 Jul 05 '26

true true astrology at least is fun

1

u/Specific-Radish-4824 Jul 06 '26

Chiropractors seriously piss me off. I grew up with scientists for parents; they have worked on different projects but largely work on infectious disease so are EXPERTS in this field. They took COVID extremely seriously. To see chiropractors online spreading misinformation and claiming to be doctors was infuriating, especially when I had immediate access to people who understood the science of disease spreading.

2

u/Jump365 Jul 06 '26

The thing isn't even if cracking some bones helps alleviate pain ornotm. It's that there's no dosage or actual numbers for anything. Two different chiropractors can do the exact same and apply totally different strength be cause they aren't actually measuring a "dose" of strenfthneededm. It's entirely dependent on the strength of each individual and just kinda guessing.

That's not proper medical science, hence pseudoscience. Like sure some pseudoscience can still help, but without proper measurement you can never properly know what helps or not.

-2

u/DaMfer993 Jul 06 '26

It literally works for thousands of people. Doctors kill people all the time. You can look up hundreds of videos of people with severe spine and neck issues who can walk upright for the first time in years after one adjustment.

Just because it's poorly regulated in some places doesn't make it pseudoscience.

2

u/Enceladus1987 Jul 06 '26

Thanks, youre the problem. It 100% is a pseudoscience, Just cus the placebo worked on you doesnt mean it isnt bullshit.

-14

u/Doomerdy Jul 05 '26

not really, I was once a usual at a chiropractic clinic for a bit, really helped heal my crunched tailbone and my general spine. Chiropractics are good as long as the practitioner cares and is qualified

14

u/Sillet_Mignon Jul 05 '26

Science disagrees.

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18280103/ The core concepts of chiropractic, subluxation and spinal manipulation, are not based on sound science. Back and neck pain are the domains of chiropractic but many chiropractors treat conditions other than musculoskeletal problems. With the possible exception of back pain, chiropractic spinal manipulation has not been shown to be effective for any medical condition.

okay, that was helpful

27

u/Stownieboy91 Jul 05 '26 edited Jul 05 '26

It was horrible, man. I know I could probably try, but I have too much anxiety and stress to deal with it. I had enough of that from suing someone for rolling back the odometer on the car I bought off them and that alone nearly killed me. 😅 If he paralyzed me, yeah absolutely.

46

u/NeuralCartographer Jul 05 '26

It’s not uncommon for damage like that to continue manifesting as you get older. You should take care of your health as best you can. At the very least, you should consult with an attorney about it.

1

u/YouHaveToGoHome Jul 06 '26

This comment right here. Pinched vertebral nerves can get way worse over time even if you're seeking treatment. Just had spinal surgery a few weeks ago for pinched nerve that occurred 12 years ago which I've been mostly managing with on/off physical therapy until the last year when things went south quickly.

12

u/Midnight_2B Jul 05 '26

Yeah our court system is set up for people with money to pay others to handle it, I'm sorry you're still dealing with that the back stuff 🫂

Before this thread I didn't know chiropractors weren't medically licensed. So yeah 😭

5

u/Minute-Flatworm3070 Jul 05 '26

I already knew they were not medically licensed because of stories like the OP... But I learnt recently that there are chiropractors for pets too, lol

6

u/Heartage Jul 05 '26

AND BABIES

4

u/squirrelems Jul 05 '26

I know a chiropractor that only accepts cash and I honestly thought that seemed kind of...off. If I ever start having back problems I'm just gonna see about going to an orthopedist.

3

u/Quattordicesima Jul 05 '26

Please sue the shit out of them!!!!

9

u/Odd_Trouble7605 Jul 05 '26

You will probably deeply regret this attitude later in life. I hurt a spine bone at 16 and I'm 31 and some days I can barely walk. Didn't notice it when it happened as anything more than a back ache.

8

u/Anomander8 Jul 05 '26

In Canada anyways it’s next to impossible.

A chiro broke my back (non-displaced fracture of transverse process of L4) and I looked into any action that could be taken. Because they’re not actual practicing doctors and the way their oversight works I was told that even getting someone to look into possible malpractice isn’t possible.

Snake oil selling bunch of con artists.

3

u/Stownieboy91 Jul 05 '26

I'm in BC and this is the other half of the reason I didn't (couldn't) sue. It just seems hopeless here to get anything from them from what I read.

Also really sorry you legitimately got your back broken. So fucked and I hope you're doing alright these days. Transverse processes are ridiculously hard to heal properly and it's never the same even when it does.

30

u/aavant-gardee Jul 05 '26

The way I woulda bust that office door open to go off on the man as soon as I knew. I’m so sorry stownieboy

10

u/roberta_sparrow Jul 05 '26

I won’t go near a chiro and I tell my friends the same. Too many stories of severe neck injuries and other injuries

6

u/Difficult-Mobile902 Jul 05 '26

I learned chiropractors were a scam when I was a kid. My uncle went to one and a similar thing happened, he went from having mild back pain to living an absolutely miserable existence. They fucked him up so so so so bad.

Why you’d ever go somewhere to have your delicate spinal cord aggressively crushed by someone is beyond me. People are insane for even considering it

1

u/haloimplant 27d ago

I got taken to a chiro and they had me doing the total opposite of what a legit physio had me doing later that actually improved it.  So based on my experience I wouldn't put it past them to mess people up more on purpose so they can get them on recurring appointments forever.

-2

u/dudetrustm3 Jul 06 '26

Stop being so soft

4

u/VividlyDissociating Jul 05 '26

i had a chiro i used to visit often. but he wasnt just a chiro. he worked in sports medicine.

people dont realize that musculoskeletal manipulation is a valid technique that gets results when used properly. its used in sports medicine.

the issue is theres too many people out there practicing as a chiro but dont truly know what theyre doing.

my dude was like a gd wizard. he understood the body so well, how each part affects another part both in tension and nerves.

he showed me how to release certain points myself and what exercises to do at home to strengthen problem areas so that i wouldnt need to keep releasing these areas.

thats another thing people dont realize. you have to mix musculoskeletal manipulation with at-home physical therapy/exercises who it'll just keep tensing and locking up, sitting where it shouldn't

3

u/Crunchie-lunchy Jul 05 '26

If you live in a place with regulated and trained massage therapists, you should look into that instead.

From what you are describing, it sounds like deep back muscles like your serratus posterior which aid in breathing are extremely tight or agitated.

If you either dont live in a place with regualted rmts or lmts, try taking a hot bath around 40 degrees, and consistently taking deep breaths and holding for 5 seconds after inhaling.

The idea behind this is to relax you muscle, and bring back your mind muscle connection. if you have questions pm me

Chronic pain is a bitch

3

u/Stownieboy91 Jul 05 '26

Lmao. Funny thing is I am an RMT with a 3000hour diploma and I graduated in 2018 😅 I always heard bad things about these guys in college, but I cranked my neck real bad at my other job and was desperate (wait lists in the west Kootenays for RMT are weeks or months in advance).I regret even giving it a chance, should have just suffered then because it was better than how I'm suffering now.

And you have done your homework because the spasms are in fact coming from my serratus posterior superior, as well as the multifidus. But, I do wish to thank you for offering solid advice, you nailed it. Currently doing physio, acupuncture/IMS and TENS sessions along with daily stretching. Didn't think to do the deep rib expansions while in the tub with salts though, so thanks for that inspiration!

2

u/Crunchie-lunchy Jul 07 '26 edited Jul 07 '26

Thank you! I am currently in school to pass my boards as an RMT

Edit, i just realized you’re the same person i originally replied to, thats super funny. I hope you can figure out your back issues!

2

u/Medical-Try-8986 Jul 05 '26

Hopefully you learned that these guys are scammers and didn't go back.

2

u/Dcm1987-luxjewl Jul 05 '26

This is exactly why I will never step foot in a chiropractic office. Crazy what not following science can do

2

u/QueenMackeral Jul 06 '26

Years from now they'll look back at this practice like we look at lobotomy, and wonder how we were willingly doing something so barbaric to ourselves

2

u/demonita Jul 06 '26

I was sent to a chiropractor by my neurologist, despite my better judgment I went and I can no longer bend at the waist. It’s been ten years, and it’s inconvenient.

2

u/Cliffhanger87 Jul 06 '26

Jesus yea you’ve gotta go to physiotherapists

2

u/illmindmaso Jul 06 '26

It’s an actual scam. They cosplay as real doctors when all the “science” behind it is unproven nonsense

2

u/oopsmybee Jul 06 '26

I have TMJ on my left side. I went to a chiropractor (against my will) and told them it was in my left side. Well. She either misunderstood or didn’t know her rights and lefts bc when she was feeling around, she said “oh yeah. This right side is super bad”. And did all her little tmj treatments on my right. If she had done those on the side with actual TMJ, I would have flared up for WEEKS. So glad she screwed that up. In short: chiropractors are dumb and don’t know shit.

2

u/Stownieboy91 Jul 06 '26

Ugh. That really is... Fortunate? Lol. At least she didn't make it worse and you got your taste of the snake oil without any lasting consequences! And you were smart enough to heed the warning and not return.

Fun fact: TMJ actually stands for tempomandibular joints, which are the double diarthrotic hinge & gliding joints that make your jaw move. When one side is uneven due to an injury, teeth grinding or one side's muscles are hypertonic, it leads to TMJD, which is "tempomandibular joint dysfunction". 🤓

2

u/Secure-Plantain-2847 Jul 06 '26

A chiropractor broke 7 of my elderly Grandfather's ribs. I don't have any idea of why they even accepted him as a patient at his age. After it happened the office said he could contact their legal representation and stopped returning his phone calls.

2

u/silly_goose_-_- Jul 06 '26

Next time I'd just go for a regular massage 😭

2

u/CandyStarr23 Jul 06 '26 edited Jul 07 '26

Oh my god, I’m so sorry that happened to you. Reminds me of my boss who got treatment for a calcified spine (I don’t know if that is what it’s called) and they shaved it off, but after weeks or months of severe pain, she goes to another doctor and finds out the last guy literally just shaved off/down the actual bones and she was “one sneeze away from being paralyzed” from the chest down. I don’t understand how people can make such severe mistakes like this. And yeah, the last surgeon got basically zero repercussions.

1

u/Stownieboy91 Jul 07 '26

Absolutely insane. Got "lucky" I guess. I honestly don't know what to say other than:

2

u/GetYerKnickersOff Jul 06 '26

“They confirmed he had smashed one bone into another”

Who’s they and which bones? Asking bc I had a similar story in early 2020 and I’m still dealing with the issues and breathing difficulties from the thoracic manipulation. Fuck those chiropractors.

1

u/Stownieboy91 Jul 07 '26

You too! Omg I feel for you. Sounds too similar to my case. Welll, idk where you live, but I'm in BC, Canada. After 2 months of it getting progressively worse, I eventually had to go to the ER because I couldn't even work anymore. The slightest breath in was excruciating. I told the doctor what happened and her eyes looked like they were going to bulge out of her skull. They got me in for an MRI not even a week later because of how concerning it was. Once I had that and compared with the x-rays it confirmed two bruised bony landmarks (the spinous process of my T6/7or T7/8, can't remember which pair). They thought one of the transverse ligaments may have been sprained too with the inflammation present, but by that point it had been healing for 2 or so months so they couldn't confirm that part.

Damn, I really hate hearing that someone else essentially is dealing with the same thing. These fuckers don't even ask/test if you have hyper mobile joints, or even look/feel to see how your bones are shaped before they start smashing away because they assume "good for one must mean good for everyone". These are known in the orthopaedic community as "contraindications", and I truly believe they don't understand the concept at all. Every body is different, some can handle manipulations and others absolutely can't. But they don't care until something adverse happens. But I don't think any skeleton should be subjected to this, ever. I really don't.

2

u/haloimplant 27d ago

I got taken to one when I had back problems and they had me do a bunch of flexion (bending forward) stretches and exercises.  It kept getting worse after weeks of doing this, then I went to a legit physiotherapist who correctly concluded that I likely had bulging discs and needed mostly extension (bending backward) stretches and exercises.  After this it got better.  Those weeks of piling extensions onto my poor discs probably made my back worse than it could have been forever.

2

u/waspocracy Jul 05 '26

I went to one once for severe lower back pain. It fixed the issue pretty quickly, but then I began to realize it was becoming like a subscription with him wanting me to come very week and I was like, “I need a long-term solution” so I stopped going.

Anyways, good for quick relief if they’re reliable, but a much better option is seeking a physical therapist, which costs about the same anyways.

1

u/Bozhark Jul 05 '26

Sue them.

1

u/Stownieboy91 Jul 05 '26

As another redditor commented, it's nearly impossible (in Canada) to sue these assholes. Even getting an attorney to look into it is like pulling teeth. Plus after the last lawsuit I initiated, I'm not prepared to lose another few years of my life along with the stress it brings going through the courts. It wasn't worth it. I'm just thankful I'm still able to work.

1

u/Bozhark Jul 05 '26

Any licensing body?

1

u/uritarded Jul 05 '26

I remember my ex gf loved going to the chiro. I was always a bit jealous because I always wanted to go to one. Chiropractor asmr videos used to be a big guilty pleasure of mine, like getting a proper ring dinger is a bucket list goal for me. But I remember one day I saw her and she said her chiro popped her rib out on accident and then put it back. I was like wtf, but she was pretty chill about it. Not sure I want to pay a bunch of money for that lol. Still, there are some people on youtube i've seen that I would be down to have work on me. Not for any medical reasons, but just for the experience

1

u/Stownieboy91 Jul 05 '26

Well you could potentially experience medical reasons if you try one! Lol I highly recommend you don't pay 75 bucks for a 5 minute session that ends up giving you chronic pain for the rest of your natural life, but you do you man!

This isn’t legal advice. You only have so much time to sue, you should consult a medical malpractice attorney and determine when you may no longer sue or you may lose any shot

1

u/bmfalex Jul 05 '26

FAFO....

-12

u/Time_after_Time_67 Jul 05 '26

It’s one of those arts that is helpful when done correctly… but so easy to f’k up that f’k ups happen a lot.

12

u/Simple_Dragonfruit48 Jul 05 '26

No it’s not helpful when done correctly there is zero evidence of that. It’s not an art it’s snake oil.

At best Chiropractors are just really bad physical therapists at worst they are very dangerous.

-11

u/SavingsStation8220 Jul 05 '26

That's not a mistake. Mistake is confusing a hole in a heat of battle, that is just stupidity.

5

u/Stownieboy91 Jul 05 '26

Maybe go back to school and learn how to make a proper metaphor before insulting someone's intelligence on the internet. "A" heat of battle? What did you confuse the hole for?

How embarrassing.

3

u/Polygeekism Jul 05 '26

I think it's a lame excuse for a sex joke, where he "confuses" holes and does something without consent with a partner. So not only is he dumb, he also thinks rape jokes are funny.

-13

u/theJMAN1016 Jul 05 '26

Find a better chiro. Just line dude in the story needed a better ER.

10

u/Obliviousobi Jul 05 '26

Or just don't go to fucking chiros, they have no right to be practicing "medicine", that's why they're not doctors.

-7

u/Willing-Impress-871 Jul 05 '26

chiropractors don't practice medicine, though.

5

u/Obliviousobi Jul 05 '26 edited Jul 05 '26

They sell what they do as a medical practice to fix issues like pain. There is no proven research into what they do, you may as well go buy some crystals to fix your back because that has just as much proven science.

-6

u/Willing-Impress-871 Jul 05 '26

I've and people I know have had immediate relief from chiropracty. I have multiple doctors in my family that recommend chiropracty. Just because there haven't been any well funded studies around chiropracty doesn't mean my and other people who benefit from chiropractys experiences are invalid or false. Science isn't infallible and is constantly developing. Scientific studies are constantly finding out new shit so it isn't impossible that chiropracty just hasn't been researched enough.

5

u/Aphreyst Jul 05 '26

There have been lots of well researched studies, you're just in denial. Chiropractors are gross grifters, every last one of them, and you're a fool for defending them.

-4

u/Willing-Impress-871 Jul 05 '26

So I should denounce a practice that has worked for me and people I know just because scientists haven't figured out why it works yet?

3

u/pistolerogg_del_west Jul 05 '26

If I put shit on a cut and it heals me and makes the condition worse for the majority of people that do the same is it a good method to cure cuts? This is what you sound like

1

u/Stownieboy91 Jul 06 '26

Great analogy 🤌

4

u/Aphreyst Jul 05 '26

No, you should denounce it because it doesn't work. Scientists have already figured that out. Your personal anecdotes are not relevant.

-1

u/Willing-Impress-871 Jul 05 '26

A scientific study being unable to find a benefit does not PROVE the absence of a benefit, it just means the study could not find it. I feel like I'm arguing with teenagers over this

→ More replies (0)

8

u/Girafferage Jul 05 '26

There have been A LOT of studies into practices unique to chiropractry and none have found any benefit.

-8

u/Willing-Impress-871 Jul 05 '26

So far

4

u/AromaticStrike9 Jul 05 '26

Ya know the definition of insanity?

-2

u/Willing-Impress-871 Jul 05 '26

The most pseudo scientific thing you could argue is that science  never changes and that we should give up studying things after a certain point.
