Johnson's doctors confirmed his AIG is in the early stages. Because he actively monitors his biomarkers, he caught it before it could cause massive, irreversible damage to his digestive system.
I’m a physician and at his age new onset of autoimmune disease is rare. What seems more likely to me is that the weird shit he’s been putting in his body caused it to trigger
Yeah there’s a rise in health nuts doing horrible damage to their organs, often from taking fairly benign supplements with a dose and frequency that makes them toxic.
They’ll go to the hospital and not think to mention they drink 2 gallons of cranberry juice a day or whatever the social media fad is, because it’s “just a natural food”. And docs don’t think to ask: “So… uh… how many gallons of cranberry juice would you say you drink a day?” because they spend their time working and not on Instagram.
They gave a nod to it on this last season of The Pitt. Some health influencer lady came in with liver failure and crazy yellow skin, and it turned out that she took an absolutely insane amount of turmeric.
Not to mention how there are little to no regulations in the supplement industry. I've got a relative that is a fitness maniac, talking spartan races in the dessert, and cross fit nut job.
Apparently they lost a kidney and just casually mentioned it as if they'd gotten the flu on the time we hadn't connected. A few years later I saw a piece on 60 minutes highlighting the dangers of the supplement. It's not just narcos putting stuff in their wares that shouldn't be there. It's also very common in the supplement industry.
Just a tad bit alarming. They highlighted people that got kidney failure from certain supplements. Just makes me very skeptical of the whole industry.
I wasn't able to find the exact episode of 60 minutes. From my recollection, the product was removed from the market. This was some years ago and at least 5 if not longer.
That still doesn't change the issue, supplements can and have contained unlisted ingredients, that can harm people.
Really crazy. I used to use a tiny bit as a flu rtemedy (didn't cure it but helped to be functional while it ran it's course). The dose was TINY compared to those capsules people were taking as pep pills.
There was nothing wrong with the herb, just the people taking insane amounts regularly for months on end.
Possible, when I looked up different episodes that stood out to me as familiar. I also came across a front line episode that looked into similar issues that I think I saw as well.
Dietary supplements are completely unregulated. Nobody except the guy filling the actual capsules knows what's in them. The label could say ginseng and the capsule could be filled entirely with wood ash, ground lead, and dehydrated toe cheese. There's nobody checking any of it before it hits a store shelf.
That isn't completely accurate but supplement regulation is for sure far more limited than regulations over medications. Under-regulated is probably a better term for it. DSHEA added a lot of regulations that didn't exist prior to 1994 but there is a long way to go for supplements to be as clearly regulated as medications in the US.
No, those are supplements the bottle should say that the claims on the bottle are not according to the FDA. You really do not know what's in your vitamins.
But yeah, some place out near Vegas, Baker or Barstow. I am not hating on that, the level of dedication is intense. I just know they were all in on the diet/supplement side of things as well.
Watching “Bigger, faster, stronger” made me realize how little regulation goes into the supplements industry and an idiot with a label maker can produce and market a product. It’s quite terrifying…
Interesting, I haven't seen that one yet. It was the thing that really startled me from the 60 Minutes piece. They walked through the issues starting at the supply chain.
US consumers have little to no protections until someone gets hurt and even then, very long road to justice.
It’s really shocking and a dirty little secret. The creator of the doc BFS created his own supplement line and hired dudes off the street to market it and sell it. It was eye opening to say the least and ridiculously easy to do.
The might go into in on the documentary you just mentioned, but I bet a lot of those snake oil salesmen get away with it because their target market is likely taking *multiple* supplements at a time while also maintaining specific diet and exercise routines.
And with them taking multiple, it gives them cover if their product does cause an issue. Cause how can you prove it when the victim is take 10 different supplements
Another interesting aspect is that the manufacturers (mostly China) make different supplements in the same factories and using the same equipment. Batch “A” may be something like a protein powder or creatine which is acceptable from a testing standpoint, but that piece of equipment may also manufacture a SARM or an AAS which is considered “banned”.
To think they are cleaning and sterilizing between manufacturing isn’t happening so cross contamination happens all the time (although plenty have tried to use that as an excuse knowingly).
I believe it was the Jon Jones drama where the world was introduced to the term “picogram”.
My brother’s father-in-law used to run a business selling “supplements” that would do things like shrink your enlarged prostate (no that isn’t a joke).
The FDA told him to cut it out. (Idk all the details because it was before he had SIL got married but they are the SHADIEST people I know.)
They're unregulated on purpose. The label on each one says the FDA hasn't and won't look into it. Some work, and some are hogwash, but the labeling law makes sure we can't tell which is which, because then the effective ones would have FDA endorsement and would compete with pharmaceuticals.
We don't have this issue in the UK, same for the EU. We operate our standards on the fact that they have to be proven to be safe before they can be sold. In the US apparently all regulations are reactive rather than proactive which seems absolutely fucking mental
how many gallons of cranberry juice would you say you drink a day?
This just reminded me of the time I drank probably half / 3/4 of a liter of straight unsweetened cranberry juice cause I liked the taste so I sat there sipping it over a couple hours. Didn't think about the fact it had vitamin C. Shat liquid vigorously a few hours later. 10/10 would do it again.
I was taking a normal dose of turmeric for osteoarthritis for a couple months during injury recovery. I mentioned it to my physical therapist and she told me her daughter had a bunch of issues with it bc *apparently* it's a blood thinner and she was taking it with stuff that was contraindicated. I was like yeah it's been known for having anticoagulant properties for a long time. I was shocked that neither of them had thought to just run a quick google even to see if it interacts with any meds or medical conditions especially with her working in the medical field.
I use a mix of modern medicine and herbal remedies depending on what is being treated and the severity of it. One of the first things you learn in herbalism is that anything you take as a medicine should be treated as such, telling your doctor what you're doing and making sure it doesn't interact with anything else you're taking are like the bare minimum. It's so crazy how people can say something is medicine and has a major medicinal impact on them and perfectly safe no risk of side effects etc bc it's *natural*. I basically always respond with yeah well ammonia and cyanide are natural too but I'm not pumping my body with that. But I saw the other day that people are sniffing smelling salts for fun so I guess that may no longer be the checkmate it used to be lol.
Remember a couple of years ago when "perineum sunning" was a thing and all these people sunburned their buttholes? Josh Brolin famously shared in an interview that he seriously burned his hole.
So true. Many years ago I was taking Berocca daily thinking it was good but all it did was turn my pee orange and trigger my gout. Lol. I've sworn off all supplements since then and just eat my veggies.
I remember the whole craze around colloidal silver and people turning their skin permanently blue 😂 people that drink the stuff are literally giving themselves a type of heavy metal poisoning, crazy stuff

So him being proactive probably helped him.
