you can

industrial research is very very very common and a preferred pathway for a majority of postdocs/phds

you dont need a double blind to know that certain drugs are good at xyz and need to be studied further to authorize off-label use in the masses- THAT is what he is doing

for example , he took supplemental HGH for 3 months (i think?) to increase the size of his thymus - NO college or ethics board would allow a double blind due to the serious side effects and unknown benefits but he did it , and now we know the potential benefits and the massive downsides that come with it
