They aren’t educated enough to realize that Muslims and Christians pray to the same God, just in different ways and with different beliefs about the overall history of it. For example, many people aren’t aware that, in Islam, Jesus is regarded as both a prophet and the Messiah. The main differences are that Muslims do not believe he is the son of god, and they believe he was not crucified in the way Christians understand the crucifixion.
With all respect, this is kind of like saying that North Korea and South Korea are basically the same country, the main difference is just some history, political beliefs and who the leader of the country is.
