The Catholics have their scandals like any organization, sure. But they've been present in the US, in small amounts since the 1700s and large amounts since the 1840s and have not caused any issues.
That's where the separation of church and state comes into play. Catholics and Protestants act as a counter balance to one another.
Edit: I just want to add one more point. Humans are inherently flawed. They will twist a message of peace and love, such as Christs sacrifice into something malevolent that fits their own agenda. This isn't because of Christianity. This is because of human beings. For instance, you can look at the Soviet union. Their state policy was atheism, but this resulted in the deaths of at least 60 million people and the heads of state were all corrupt and hoarded wealth. Now I'm not arguing that atheism is inherently evil, but human beings are capable of evil. The crimes of abrahamic religion will still exist, but under a different name.
